Default t5 gearbox and lsd diff oil questions

hey all. have been browsing a few threads about lsd's and came across a thread (cant find it now unfortunately) about people only using a certain type of oil in their t5 gearbox's. i went to bursons and the guy gave me "castrol manual vmx 80" for the gearbox, where in the thread i was reading, everyone reccommended a different sort of oil, can anyone tell me why this oil would be bad to use (the castrol stuff) and what the name of the better oil to use would be?

also i bought some "castrol rear axle saf-xa" full synthetic oil for the diff, as advised by the same guy at bursons.. but then realised my diff is in bad need of a rebuild, with alot of movement in the tailshaft (no its not the unis, or center bearing, etc).. so should i just leave it till it gets rebuilt and take the oil back? i also got told that that castrol oil was not thick enough and got advised to buy penrite limslip 140W for the diff if i needed to top it up or flush the oil etc. does this sound about right?

anyone got some sound advice for me on these oils? would be much appreciated.

oh and sorry for the essays ive written above aswell lol. thanks in advance

lets just say i used castrol oil in my diff and the bearings now whine. it wasn't the full synthetic stuff but i won't touch castrol again.

the manual recomends 80w90 for a standard diff, for LSD get oil thats specified for LSD use. 80w140 is a heavier grade oil that will handle more abuse before you get into trouble, thats what i use in anything other then a standard road car which gets 80w90 from me. i use penzoil and have never had any issues. 1.7ltrs

as for the trans. use dexron III, do NOT use standard gearbox oil. Holden specified oil in the VN's but changed it to Dexron III in later models. i run straight Dextron III and have never had any issues (considering it's driven fairly hard) the manual recomends to use dexron III and add 150ml of penrite lubrizol total capacity is about 2ltrs

other members who have had issues with there T5 transmissions, trouble shifting etc have changed from standard transmission oil to dexron III with good results

if the diff is that trashed i wouldn't worry about new oil until it's rebuilt

yeah i might take the diff oil back considering it was fairly expensive.

where do you get the dexron III gearbox oil from? just bursons or the equivalent store?

    thanks for the advice aswell

Bursons should stock it. And you're best off taking the diff oil back and changing it for the good Penrite stuff. That's what I use in my LSD, and it's still quiet and tight.
