Yes they are legal as long as you follow certain criteria.

    Must be on passenger side.
Must not be more reflective than your current paint, ie. no chrome. Black should be fine.
If you run a piece of string from the top of you windshield to end of bonett, guages must not touch string.

    Follow those and your fine.

If you dont know the answer when someone asks for advice, dont give a stupud two word answer which is wrong.

I've just gone by this (excerpt from vicroads modification guide VSI 8 - section 15) available at:

    http://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/NR/rd...340/0/VSI8.pdf

drivers or passangers side doesn't matter, so long as it meets all the requirements....

Yes, they can be on either side. Iv'e had mine on the cowl for quite a few years and never had a second look from the boys in blue! Its the same as anything, if you are being stupid at the time they see you they will use the gauges as an excuse to defect you.....

the guys running Transport SA are noobs lol they always seem to wanna do things differently to the other states.
we can drive, its the silly pedestrians who walk in front of us. i'd more worried about what injury the car itself causes, not some silly gauges or bonnet pins. however, that is my opinion only
