Ok, its an out there question, but can i safely put a tinnie (12ft) on a set of roof racks on a sedan?
I have seen it done on wagons before, and have heard of a guy that puts one on his falcon, but am wondering if any one here has any insight?
Before anyone says get a trailer, i cant! The Van goes there!!
Its 90min of hiway driving to the spot i go to and i dont want to wreck the roof, gutters or end up killing anyone if its a stupid idea!
Thanks

I personally wouldn't do it on a sedan. on a wagon, maybe. There would be too much overhang and only a small area in the middle actually supporting it. I might risk it if I was only going a few kms slowly, but driving for 90 minutes at high speed just seems a bit dangerous to me. This is just my opinion and I have no experience with roof racks to back it up. I suppose it would also depend on the type of racks you would use.
How heavy is the boat?
I have seen it done, where they tie it down to the front and rear of the car but that would increase the weight on the racks. When I have seen it done I thought, that looks dangerous.
MY RIDE
I thought I was wrong once but I was mistaken.
Weight is 50Kg (ish).
Yeah the small base to take the weight is of concern to me as well...
The racks are all steel, with RHS for the support..... they can take the weight, but its mainly the safety that has me worried.
Well have to put it off till i get an urban assult tanker.....
Glad that someone else is thinking of the exact concerns i was! Thanks
How tall is your van?
Maybe you can consider putting a set of racks on top of it and tinnie on top.
Is it salt water or fresh where u go? Because even if you wash the boat down well you will still always get salty reidue deposited on your car that will help lead to rust.
I beleive that on a wagon you are distributing the weight a bit better over a larger area than on a sedan.
I agree with accentstensil, if it was a short trip at low speed.. no worries, but IMHO i dont think that it is very wise move.
The van is a 16ft fiberglass job, nothing in the roof to mount a rack to or take the weight... joys of a light van!
I was doubtful of the idea before i started... but wanted someone else to second my ideas. thanks
