Hi all, when my VN hasnt been driven for a day or two, she takes about 15 seconds after i select R, before it actually locks into reverse?!?!?! Any ideas or is my gearbox on the way out? When its warm it goes in straight away
give it a service
the gear-box. just to be clear.
Sounds like your auto is on its way out, sounds like the pump inside the auto is draining oil back into the sump and when you go to select reverse it takes awhile for it to select because its trying to pick up the oil.Dont change the oil or flush it,if you change the oil it will probably not go into reverse just keep topping it up when it needs to and just baby it around till your ready to fork out the money for a new one.

F#$! i prob dont have the money for a new one! I was about to put LPG on it might ave to get a new box instead
Yep, as said auto is on the way out. All downhill from here!
me mums vn had a problem where in the mornings the car wouldnt engage reverse untill about 30 + seconds after you selected reverse (when warm it selected revers straight away)....sometimes even up to 2 minutes. We changed the oil and filter about 3 times in 6 months with no luck and at one stage we were considering selling the car until we changed the oil again with some shell dextron 3 auto oil (that we got cheap due to shell petrol station closing down). I have no idea WTF is in that stuff but the next morning it went straight into reverse (and no im not making this up) this (the car not selecting reverse) went on for a few years and now hasn't happened since 1 and half years ago. Like i said i have no idea what was in that oil but it sure did fix this problem that we had. However we were using valvorline oil in it before the shell. maybe the shell oil had some conditioning stuff in it that was better then the moreys auto stop leak/seal conditioning stuff (i think it was). that we tried
but yeah it could be that the auto is stuffed, but id probably try and give it a service first with some high quality oil and a filter change, wayyy cheaper then a new box
hop it helps
DEXRON 3 auto transmission fluid has been sold for many years now so i dont think changing the grade of oil is going to make any difference. My fiance's mum has a VN wagon and it takes some time to get into reverse (the auto in it is on its way out),simply by changing oil in a transmission of a car thats 20 years old isnt going to wake the dead.Like i said he should just baby it around till he is ready to fork out money for an exchange one. Also if you are going to get gas fitted to your car,i would do it soon because the government are going to scrap the idea of the rebate on fitting gas,was mentioned on the news a week ago,and you know the government.

lol wasn't saying that i changed to dextron 3 oil, was saying what the oil was (as you are supposed to use dextron 3 oil in the auto's anyway)...always ran dextron 3 in it....its supposed to anywayand like i said not saying its gonna work but it is worth giving it a service first. not worth changeing the box and spending big $$$ and finding out it only needed a filtre change and oil change.....i know thast what id be doing first
