    Default Next service..... Oil thickness.........

Hey guys, i had a look for threads like this, but couldn't find anything. Last time i serviced my car, i used a 50W oil i think it was on my engine, but lately i have been hearing that the old Buick 6's might need something a little thicker due to the age of the engines.

What thickness would anyone reccommend, as i am about to do a major service on my car. I usually use Penzoil.

I have used Penrite for high performance engines
its a bit thicker but works well in the Buick.

Are you having problems with your current oil?

Im using helix atm, its fine..not a worry

I'm guessing the Penrite high performance oil is around a 50w???

Ive used pennzoil 15-40 multi vis in my vp for the last 2 years. i change oil + filter every 6 months or 5000 klms, motors done about 240000 klms. but my car has an easy life, motor rarely goes over 4000 rpm. probably if ya motor was turboed or charged would have more stress + heat then will need higher performance rated oil. if i was doing a lot of long distance driving when its hot weather i would use at least a 20-50 oil with a good quality rateing like pennzoil , penrite . i would stay away from those thin fully synthetic oils ,too thin [ 5-30 or 10-30 ] unless you have used that synth oil since motor was new or rebuilt

The 50 is the hot viscosity, that is achieved by added polymers. The first number is the starting viscosity. Don't go any lower than a 20, as time goes by, the polymers are the first to break down, so at it's thinnest, it will get down to the first number. The second number is how it will flow when hot, eg: no thinner than a 50w oil, and no thicker than a 20w when cold. PM make a 25W60 that is very good for high km engines. Talk to bradcad, he can get you a good deal on it.

Thanks guys! It's just my mechanic across from my house uses his oil that he uses on all his customers cars, but he asked me what oils, coolants, filters etc that I USE, and he said he will order in all the brands etc i use usually for top ups and minor services and he will use them on my car for my major service in the future.

I was gonna do my major service but i barely have an hour to scratch my ass in the next 3 weeks and i'm not going to let my car become overdue for it's major service, so my mechanic is going to do it for me.
