Exclamation Power steer cuts out then cuts back in!!!!

Searched and couldn't find the answer...
VP Calais V6, driving home today my power steering cut out around a corner and the steering went really heavy. I went to pull over but as I did the power steering was fine again

Anyway I checked the fluid and all was fine- plenty in there, no weird noises from the pump. But it did it several more times on the way home. Now before I kill someone what is wrong with the steering? Its dangerous at the moment!

Perhaps the drive belt has stretched beyond it's limit. Check the indicator on the tensioner.

By the sounds of it, its only happening when cornering? or is that only when you notice which would make sense lol

I just read in another thread where someone had the same problem as you and he took it to Holden where they reset the BCM and fixed the problem. Assuming you have the speed sensitive steering, try resetting the BCM.

park your car and turn the wheel, if you cant hear the pump working then its dead. if not get the steering rack checked out.

mate like in the other thread, your vn pump if it hasnt been rebuilt is getting on near 16-17 years old so its a fair bet the seals have hardened inside the unit and when you turn the corner and put it under load the fluid just gets past the seals .i went to holden and for $19-35 got a rebuild kit and took about two hours to do and they work like new and no leaks or noises. i think there is even a thread on how to as well. good luck

Haha yeah thats when its noticable, but come to think of it... the steering does feel heavy even before you start turning the wheel. Like you can nearly predict when it will happen

Do you mean groaning when on full lock? the power steering pump is turning as long as the engine is going?!

I'm not losing any fluid tho. Are you saying I could have an internal leak- like it just leaks past a seal and therefore wont build pressure?

if you leave the car parked with the motor running and can hear the powersteering pump when turning the wheel the pump is working fine and would be looking elsewhere for a solution.

I have to reset my bcm every couple days to fix my pwr steer.

It just stays on low boost.

Sumtimes i have to reset it a couple times a day.

I do get that problem with really heavy cornering sumtimes if ur doin over 60km other times its light as.

Im not sure how to fix tho i recon its either BCM or rack, gotta put a tech tool on to find out what the go is i recon

All I can hear is the motor when I do that mate, only time I hear the power steering is when I get to full lock and it starts to moan and groan.

if the bcm did make a differance when you reset it then your pretty spot on to hitting the nail on the head! youll have to go to holden for matching bcm specs to your car wouldnt you?

I'm not sure though mate. Cos the problem isn't a constant thing. Resetting the BCM might not have done anything. Could have just been a coincidence

Im starting to have the same problem in my VR. Only at low speeds tho, like when I turn into my driveway or parking the car.

I talked to Davie Parts in Auckland about power steering, and they convinced me there was no such thing as a Holden kit for racks or pumps. So if you guys can get them cheap over there i'm gonna be mighty ****ed.
