Hey my exhaust is cracked on the 'Y' piece where the 2 pipes join just before the cat. If i rev the car in neutral, when the revs are dropping I can hear a hissing noise and im guessing its air escaping or getting sucked into the exhaust. Would this be right? and would it have caused any damage to cat? Its been like this for a few months now. car still runs fine. I called exhaust place to see how much a new 'y' piece was, and its gona cost me $240 to get it replaced. This sounded expensive to me. how much should i be paying? cheers.

less than that, i had a custom one made up for 150...
You could buy my twin system for $260 more hint hint
It's pretty common for that to happen on S1 VN's (the exhaust mounting is different on later models).
Can't it be welded? It would take longer to put the car on a hoist than to run the weld - < $50
So Thats what that noise is on my car .... always suspected it was a exhaust leak
if your in perth i have a mig welder at home and i can have it fixed for u in a jiffy for nothing
Why make a comment like that.
Chances are the pipe is crystalised, that could be why it is leaking. You could try getting it welded, but be prepared in the event that it needs replacing. Ring around, get a few more quotes. It is the dearer of the two engine pipes, because it has the flange for the cat and it is quite long. Also try a wreckers for a s/h part.
weld it up you idiot lol.... dosnt take a genuis to realise you need to take the Y peice off the car first to get a good weld / clean it up... has everyone left their thinking caps on the bus?
you can even weld in a fillder section but i dont see why you cant weld that up
I already got a redback catback exhaust for $300 thats why i thought it was a bit steep priced for the Y piece. Havnt had time this week to call around. Gona try weld it up today if that fails gonna have to ring around a few places next week.

I welded up the crack fine, but still makes a kinda hissing noise while the revs are dropping after i rev it in neutral. I had another listen and it kinda sounds like its coming from the cat converter. Is it possible for exhaust gases to leak out of the cat somewhere?
My car also sounding bit different the last few months. not as good as it sounded when i 1st got exhaust done. Is taking taking the cat off as simple as undoing the bolts and sliding it out, or is there more to it?

its pretty much that easy, u may need a wedge or screw driver to pry it off a little. but its fairly straight forward.
Are there any gaskets or anything that i will have to replace when i put it back on? and if its stuffed, would a 2nd hand cat be good enough because i think there pretty expensive new

a second hand one should be fine aslong as its not as blocked or stuffed as yours. if you have a good wreckers around try get a hold of a gen 3 cat and have that flanged to suit your car. for a slight gain
.
they use a gasket of their flanges usualy. exhaust shops should stock these.
