Hey guys,
So I finally got around to measure a "baseline" (if you want to call it that) 0-100kph time for my car.
Car: 1992 Vp Commodore Wagon 5L V8 Automatic
Mods: Extractors, twin cat exhaust system into single 3" at diff, shiftkitted auto, 3.9 Diff gears with LSD, pod filter and a FOAM tune
Result: 6.9sec 0-100kph
Comments: Manually shifted through the run shifting at 5000rpm. Had a mate in the passenger seat timing the run with his stopwatch. Still had spare tyre + subs in the boot. 1/4 Tank of Fuel. No CAI to pod filter. Engine temp 95 deg. Outside temp 14 deg.
There is a lot of room for improvement. I want to try a run with a G-tech and no passenger/spare tyre/subs to weigh me down... See how I go....

Well 60 mph comes up about .15 or even .2 quicker than 100km/h depending on the car. Plus I think you will find a gtech much quicker than stopwatch because it only starts when the dash lifts, similar to the track. Stopwatchers normally start the clock when the pedal moves, but theres a bit of a delay between that and the car actually moving. Also if it's still running the old can coil throw that in the bin and new dizzy cap and rotor. Those 3 things could be worth anything up to half a second depending on how worn they are. But yeah like all 5 litres I think you wont have any problem getting it down to 6 flat to 60 mph with a few select little mods here and there, Also a cold intake is worth at least a couple tenths if not more over a pod on a 5 litre, Mine had a pod on it when I bought it and changing that to just a factory cai (opened up) made a notable difference.
P.S check your base timing![]()
I'll check base timing this week when I get a chance, I forgot to mention, changed dizzy cap and rotor button when I put the engine in, so they are both new.

In regards to the stopwatch, I simply had my mate in the passenger seat start timing when we took off and stopped when i hit 100kph....
p.s: go to bed jason!

Yeah I should go to bed, I have to wake up to see this show on channel 9 about the new Falcon but I forgot what time it starts:P
OMG go to bed. it's 4am.
Did you hit the streets tonight Dioxide? How bad was itlol, useless night out if I ever saw one.
And yeah, as greenfoam said, you should find a few tenths in a G-Tech time.

hehe, i remember when i first got my SS, it was in the 7s, with just tweaking and a cam its now down to high 5s (cam didnt help heaps, more helped over the 1/4)
mate the best way to time your car ive found is to film it, then view it several times, with edits from when you take off and finish, you get a more accurate reading....
Also people may be a fan of manual shifting, but in all honesty it makes you go slower, if you wnat me to explain i can but not stuffed at the moment : )

Manual shifting gets more revs out of your engine before the shift, I know my car wont do as good with auto shifting because the kickdown is way too low, im sure other cars are like that. If you set you kickdown too high for everyday use its a pain in the ass, so thats why its best to leave it so it shifts good for street use and manual shift it when your getting times.
you have to remember there is atleast 1 second between when the foot goes on the pedal to when the car actually starts moving, you'll notice this at the drags, by the time the middle yellow light comes on in the christmas tree im hard on the throttle, and still get a RT of like .8
is that why you guys have lower times than me? i count as soon as my foot goes to the floor!
I used to tune my kickdwon for years but found the best combination was to set it to stock specs, the only disadvantage is 1st gear doesnt rev out as high as it would tuned.....
and the manual shifting does allow you to rev out the 500rpm it usually misses out on in drive, but when you shift from 1st to second you lose time waiting for it to shift gears and bouncing off the limiter. yeah if you get it spot on (shifting the lever from 1st to 2nd at around 5000rpm) it can be quicker but theres alot of room for error and most the time end up going slower. I dont know if shifting manually would make 'that much; of a difference anyway........
I aim to shift at 5300, thats what ill be trying on the drag day and lower the tyres down to about 35psi.
i hope i can save up the 60 bucks, so i can try out my cai and foam tune, might pull a 14.5 with chip, cai, and manual shifting to 5500??. whats the deadline for entries?
Shifting to 5500 for you wont help, my car makes max power at 5200 stock. I think you should stick arround 5200ish too, 5500/limiter is just a tad too high.
I cant see a deadline as such, but the say is 12th July and I woudl think they would want all payement by end of june, Im not sure if tyhere is a limited ammount of entrants but i know they will fill up quick already have 38 paid. Send impulsesv6 a PM on that site and ask.
it will shift earlier if they'res not enough power remember this,
notice how fast my revs shoot past 5000rpm, because of my cam im still making good power till 6000rpm
YouTube - 0-60 Run - lack of traction
hes running 6.9, 0-60 :P and a 14.8, my car should be doing 14.4/5 atm if the weather was right yet best ive run was a 14.90, but that was in 45 deg heat :P with a over heating motor and no F31 fix :P
if i leave in in drive and nail it, itll shift at 5000rpm, which is ok but the extra 500rpm gets you to 70km/h which allows you to shave a bit of time off your 0-100 times. id does pull hard higher in the rpm, even with the stock chip and exhaust it pulls pretty hard for a stock 5 litre higher in the revs, hopefully this new tune will make it wind up a bit harder!
but my point is is your car efficient @ 5500rpm? i dont think so :P do you have a tune?
if you want to bring your gears closer together get diff gears!
if my limiters set @ 5500rpm ill bounce off it 3-4 times before it will shift
ill definately give you a run for your money once i get my new tune : )
already been!
dont worry im keen to come to this drag meet to see how mine goes compared to yours : )
I aim to shift at 5250 rpm for optimal times, you can't allways get it exact but I can land it between 5100 and 5300 90% of the time no problem. Anywhere between 5100 and 5400 will give almost the same time, 5000 is a touch low
depends, you have the corvette servo, in my statesman i didn't need to manually shift as i had the kick down adjusted for performance, in the calais it has the delayed/sluggish shift they come out with stock, i reckon at full throttle shifting to second gear (lever) at about 5000rpm just cuts it on the redline.. yeah it is hard to get right on the limiter but when it does, by god does it launch!
