Hi guys,
What size should the master cylinder be? 1" or 15/16?
VN SS Auto. 1990.
What would be the result of using a 1" instead of a 15/16?
Lower pedal?
Any different for cross drilled rotors?
Cheers, Col.
Should be a 1" master. Cross drilled rotors are a waste of time just get slotted rotors if you have to.
The rotors are already on the car.
I'me trying to understand why the brake pedal goes down so far.
Everything works fine, just too much pedal travel.
I thought the brake system was the same as VL Turbo, which has the 15/16 m.s.
Could also be fluid related. Have you flushed the system with brand new brake fluid and bleed all the air out?
v8's had the larger (1") master. not sure on the v6 size, but it's smaller. i also have a bit of travel in mine, but i'm taking it in tomorrow (getting fronts machined, and new pads) so i'll let you know what they said the cause is for my probs.
I've replaced pads front & rear.
Also bled the system.
Is the m/s actuating rod adjustable?
Is that all you have done?
If it is, I would suggest that it's possible you haven't bled the system in the right way (have another go at it):
L rear
R rear
L front
R front
Do not allow the pedal to come back up with a bleed screw open.
Don't let the pedal hit the floor. The master cyl. only travels a short distance during normal use and crud and corrosion can build up in the M/C bore where it isn't normally wiped by the piston seals. This is especially so if the fluid isn't changed regularly. If while bleeding the system you let the pedal (piston) travel far enough into the bore to contact the corrosion/crud, the seals in the M/C can be damaged.
Really crap pads can be flexible enough to give the impression of a low pedal but I'd say that's fairly unlikely these days.
(A 1" M/C will produce less pedal travel for the same displacement of fluid volume.)

I can bleed brakes. But thanks for that.
Going to flush the fluid & replace.
I sold my VN SS a few months back. But it was a manual.
I bought this other VN SS auto by accident.
The difference between pedal travel on the 2 cars is very noticable.
I suppose it is also possible that the disc pads can give a different pedal feel.
If at the end of the day your still unhappy and want to replace the master cylinder the part number is P10331 and can be had for $120 - $180 if you know the right people![]()
How does one buy a VN SS by accident?
JetSpin Racing Team Mantre:

I was looking for a set of VP GTS rims for my VS Caprice. I wanted a set in the chapagne color specifically. Didn't like my chances much.
Then a guy i work with shows me a phone pic of a VN SS he got as payment for a bad debt. Guess what rims were on it?
So i bought the wheels for $200, then bought the car a week later for $1500.
BTW, these are his prices. I didn't even negotiate.
I was just going to make a quick $ on the SS until a good m8 fell in love with it. Damn!
We flushed the fluid out today & re bled the system. All is good.
Brake pedal now has a lot more 'feel'.
Thanks for the input guys, very much appreciated.
Here's a couple of pics.
what's the go with the wood grain,
Not wood grain, real wood.
I think it was owned by a frustrated carpenter!
Actually looks good.
