at the moment i have 10w 40 oil in my vn ss.
theres a slight problem.
when its cold its fine after the engine is warm when u take your foot off the throttle the oil light comes on but it sort of flashes then when the engine gets hotter its on at idle.
im guessing because the oil is too thin the oil pressure sensor doesnt read it that well?
also you can hear my lifters ticking slightly.
so i figured to put some thicker oil through.
im not sure what to go for.
i was thinking 20w 50 but possible 25w 50.
theres also 25w 60 but i dont think id need that.
what would anyone suggest i take?
would 25w 50 be too thick or just right.
or 20w 50?
Penrite recommend HPR15 which is 15W-40, it may just be the oil you are using.
E.g The bloke that owned my car always put in 20w-50, and i prefer penrite, not sure what he was using, anyway it ran fine on the oil he used, but it hates penrite, bangs like crazy in the top end on start up, takes up to 10 seconds to settle.
10w40 would be a bit thin on a high mileage engine. it's the second number your concerned with as it represents the oil viscosity at operating temp (the first number represents cold operating performance). 20w50 or 20w60 would be your best bet i think. also need to look into the reason for the low oil pressure when it's up to temp. has it had regular servicing? if not a partially blocked pickup could be the problem. it may pay to fit a proper oil presure guage temporarily to see what the actual pressures are. this will give a better indication of what the problem may be. a worn engine with excessive bearing clearances will show good oil pressure when cold but low oil pressure when hot.

chuck some Penrite HPR 50 in. I had a 5ltr Vn with some 230000 on the clock. The oil light used to do the same exact thing. HPR 50 is a thicker oil so it also fixed the cold start lifter noise i had.

20-50w definately, i dont know why people are interested in putting a thin oil to a large motor.
try the penrite stuff ...we have hpr30 in all our commys (2 vn's and a vp) and its good quality for money that oil
i just got some Penrite HPR30 20w 60.
ill see how that goes.
should be good.
i have a feeling you made the right choice, let us know if it quietens it down
Rather than making a new thread ill just hijack this one lol.. What oil should I use in a s1 vn stock as with 112'k on the clock. This will be the first oil change since I've had the car so I don't know what it likes doesn't like. Thanks for any help.
yeh the hpr30 runs alot better.
the oil light doesnt come on.
it only slightly flashes after a longer run.
but im gonna replace the oil pressure sensor and it should do fine.
also im in limp home mode at the moment because my memcal is stuffed but thatll be fixed next week.
wow, thats low km's for a s1, mine has 126'k on her. i run a 10w40. mine was a 1 owner (older gentleman who used to ride the clutch but otherwise looked after it fairly well) i'm going to assume someone has also looked after yours considering the mileage so a semi-synthetic 10w40 should be fine. if not a 20w50

most of the guys in aussie (i'm in NZ) seem to go with penrite. haven't personally tried it but haven't heard any complaints from members on this forum about it. i use penzoil in the VN and i've just put some Fucsh in the VS which seems good so far. stay away from castrol though, it's got a bad rep in older engines

I've always stuck with Valvoline, and in particular the 15w 40 Engine Armour is great in higher milage engines.

Hey mate, if that's YOUR attitude then you are the one with a problem. What happened - your car get defected because it was unroadworthy? You apparently haven't thought through the possible consequences from such a statement. Who do you think might come to your aid when a car load of &$@*^ pull you over one night for road rage? Who do you think will respond to your home when some idiot commits home invasion and threatens you and your family? Who do you think will respond if/when you stack your car and are trapped inside? Might pay to reconsider what you have stated and remove it. Who knows how many cops might read this forum and have already identified you and your vehicle. Might only be a matter of time before you become their 'favourite target' and your car is consigned to the scrap heap. Grow up, act responsibly and have respect for others. Have a nice day.
o0o0o.....well let me get you the phone then tough guy.
whooo....a bit (alot) off topic there lol
al;so supercheap has i think 25% off alll penrite oils so if ya need some oil (if they still have any...mine doint) go to supercheap :P
"Benboy" ha thats funny stuff like sum1 said wayyy off topic man cant you atleast PM him n tell him off..
well guys im coming closer to an oil change myself i got a v6 and the engine has almost made 245K
which oil is actually good and that will stop or quieten down the ticking noise and make the motor run better, the oil in it now is GTX3?
Go the valvoline 20/50 on special at supercheap, 5 liters for $12. Cant go wrong, will clog up everything in your old engine and keep that compression on the up, cant have none of that engine cleaning sythetic rubbish
