    Exclamation vp overheating :(

    hey guys

driving home today from a mates house, about 5 minutes from my joint, the temperature gauge was very high, almost to the top. when i stopped and opened the bonnet, i found the radiator cap to be stone cold.

i went to open it, and as soon as i released a bit of pressure, BAM, massive amounts of water are being pumped into my overflow tank, which was previously empty. it just kept on pouring for ages, and it seemed like the water was boiling almost!

has anyone has this problem before, or know what i can do to fix it? ive had stacks of cooling problems before (radiator gone, water pump gone etc..) so id really like to kill this problem before it gets out of hand!

    thanks heaps

I'll say thermostat too. Happened to my VP not long. They just seize up sometimes. A censor from Holden will cost you $15.

Did you replace it with the right cap? they have PSI ratings.

New cap, new thermostat (don't forget your thermo housing gasket), flush it twice and bleed when you're done.

yeah, its a blocked thermostat, you can usually tell by feeling the top radiator hose, if its coldish then its blocked or the radiator is but ususally the thermostat

its low on water and the water thats in there has turned to steam and when water is under pressure it raises the boiling point so when you release the pressure you have all that water at a higher them that instantly wants to expand hence it coming out as soon as you popped the cap

everyones just said thermostat? what about thermo fan not engaging, operation of the water pump fins or a possible blockage?

Mate when you squeeze the radiator hose (when its warmed up) is it stiff or can you squeeze it easily? also with the radiator cap off, can you see the coolant circulating through the radiator?

HaHA so true, but he has a point. Was the thermo fan running wen ya pulled over? As for the pouring into the overflow, it obviously was built up with pressure. Should of checked the top hose wasnt rock hard. Luckily you didnt get burnt

Do as everyone said, but make sure you bleed the system just at the thermostat housing via the screw. Also give ya engine a good doin over with the hose when the thermostat housing is off. Just make sure you remove the bottom hose LOL
