Hi there, got a few dramas with my V6 Datto 1600. VP motor and running gear. Engine idles very ruff. When accelerating it coughs and splutters like it is missing sometimes backfiring. Heres the thing. Exhaust is twin 2 1/4" from flanges into hotdogs with NO CAT. Could this be the cause? If not the coil pack is from a series 1 VN not VP. There doesn't appear to be a fuel regulator in the engine bay (should there be one??) If so does anyone have a pic of it and its location? Are there any numbers on the engine for reference, and a website to check these numbers to find out what year model the engine is and if it is a commodore or toyota lexcen engine?? Your help will be greatly appreciated, thankyou.
yes there should be a fuel regulator... to regulate the fuel going into the motor... it will not run properly without it. i would doubt someone would be stupid egnough to not be using one.. i dont have a picture of it, but it is usually off the end of the injector fuel rail, small brass looking object.
also no cat shouldnt matter TOO much, not egnough to be causing them problems, i would find that regulator if i were you and if u cant find one ur going to need one.
Thanks for the reply bloke, on the fuel line just before the rail there is a brass T piece with a thread which seems to be closed however some fuel is leaking from this. In the glove box i found what appears to possibly be a brass regulator will have to find out for sure. Through your experience what would be causing this problem i am experiencing, lack of fuel or excess fuel as it runs very ruff like its starving for fuel however when cranking over to start she sometimes backfires. Thanks for your help.
i would start off getting the leak fixed, if theres a leak then youll have air in the system causing low pressure.
is it showing a check engine light on the dash?
Thanks for your responce, only had it started once when i backed her off the trailer on friday night and to be honest with you i was to busy enjoying the feeling of that big V6 in the dattos small engine bay so i wasnt lookin at the dash but will check that tomorrow. Not sure if the bloke who built this car wired the standard engine warning light to the commodore ecu but this i will find out. I will start with a fuel pressure reg as previously suggested and go from there. Should i go for a standard v6 regulator or an aftermarket one?? Cheers.
stock one will be fine unless its heavily modded?
the datto i had was the only car i ever owned that i could zig zag between the cats eyes on our open roads without hitting them. awesome wee cars. with a commy v6 in it tho, yeee haaaa. cool fun wee car.
Yeah mate it is unreal fun to drive, be even better when the engine gets rebuilt and the addition of a snail, cant wait!!
sounds like ur on the money, try and fix your leak if not get a whole new regulator, they arent to expensive, standard vn-vp one will be fine mate. to me it sound slike ur flooding ur motor by a leaky regulator. start from there![]()
Cheers man, faulty regulator and external fuel pump damaged and leaking, with these replaced and new plugs plus replacing coil pack from vn series one with a series two vp has her runnin sweet az!!!! Next is a highflow cat and single 2 3/4 inch exhaust WITH MUFFLER, its just too damn loud atm and with the lack of backpressure is running a little rich. This little datto is a grunting, snorting angry piece of work, looking forward to Wakefeild Park NSW Australia once the blower goes in (next month)
Hi there this is for member 'vn calais manual' mate i just bought a sc14 blower for the datto. It would be greatly appreciated if you could send me some pics of your engine bay so i can checkout how you've set up and mounted the blower + coil pack etc. Looks like you've done a top job. If you will, please send pics to o38calibre@yahoo.com.au
cheers bloke.
