now it only a 3.8L, no pod at the moment, and it uses a full tank of juice and i only do about 300km, now i have changed the fuel pump, a new oxy sensor when it in about 2 months ago when i started to have this problem, now do theses car have an auto choke, as i have been told it might be that, but sa im not sure i have to ask, what can this be caused from, thanks
Maybe your foot has got heavier? If you have a bit of a heavy foot 300kms out of a tank sounds about right. I have got worse.
Australia. Love it or leave it
Do you have flat tires?
Do you have a fuel leak?
How do you drive?
Hows your air filter?
Do you have a 30 litre tank(sif)?
Any mods?
What sort of driving do you do?
aZk.
300kays out of a 63 litre tank is common on the average v6. if your motors in good condition and hasnt got 300,000+ km/s, get your motor de-carboned.
Thats pretty poor, i do feel sorry for you guys.
Im currently getting around 700kms per 60L in my VR Wagon. It is manual which adds about 100-150kms, but ive done the following mods to improve fuel economy.
Remove the bellmouth
CAI, About $60 from ebay
Exhaust system (Pacemaker extractors + CAT + Rear Resonator)
Memcal Reprogramming
New Spark Plugs, New Leads, New Coil Packs, VY Injectors (Straight swap over, cost $100), New Air Filter, New Fuel Filter, New Oil Filter, Oil Change (High quality oil), New O2 Sensor, 18" Mags running at 42psi
So yeah, If i push really hard i get 350-400kms from a single tank (That includes flat chat 0-100 from every set of lights, in about 8s) High speed driving through mount Dandenong etc etc.
Again being manual, that saves a bucket load of fuel compared to the Autos, but i would still expect 550-600kms a tank.
wagons get 80 litre tanks dont they?
An average VP V6 auto should do a little over 600 ks from a tank in a pretty much straight line on the highway, which you can increase to 800 ish with the mods feistl has suggested. No use doing those until you can make 600 stock tho because it must have issues
I agree, 300-400kms indicates something seriously wrong. Has the OP checked the error codes?
Its either 60L or 65L, Most ive ever put in has been 63L. When i work out my economy i measure the amount of fuel filled up compared to the kms traveled. Its generally not a good idea to run the car very low on fuel. Can easily kill the fuel pump
well to all that want to know, i dont have a lead foot as im only on one point, and i have changed the o2 sensor and the fuel pump, im woundering if anyone knows any good machanics to take it too to have them look at it, im in geelong in victoria, cheers
New plugs/leads
did you change the fuel filter?
new air filter
when was the last oil change?
Illegitimi Non Carborundum
i have found when the oil is near due for a change my mileage gets worse. also here is a little kicker my wife and i work roughly in the same area of brisbane but i have to go an extra 15min, so about 26km either way to home.
i'm driving my VP 5 speed ute, 3.45 diff, stock engine, chiptorque chip, no extractors and a 3" exhaust with a resinator for a muffler (for turbo setup), and the turbo removed and i drive with a bit of spirit i use 50 bucks per week and can last me near 6 days to and from work
wife on the other hand has a 2002 V6 Camry 3L auto traveling say 6km either way less then me drive like a grandma in a stock camry apart from wheels and suspension uses near on 70 bucks per week if not a touch more.
but come out onto the highway and the camry gets a **** load better economy with a high speed cruise with premium in the tank
Temp sensor telling the ecu the car is cold so it pumps more fuel in - my 2 bob's worth.
White 05 V6 VZ Executive - Thrashed Ex Telstra car
and 3 Dangerous non ABS VN's
i rememmber hearing either 70or 80 but couldnt remeber, the vn wagons had the 80's im sure, thats why i thought the later models might as well.
V8 Sedans had the 80 litre tanks, all VN-VS wagons had the 68 litre tank
If ignorance is bliss why aren't there more happy people around ?
hmm sorry to hijack, this thread makes me think i should do an error code test... lately my fuel average has gone from 14ltr/100km city. to 20ltr/100km..... pain in the ass..

To ad onto size in tanks, My VP V6 has a 75L or something like that. Takes 68-71/L above red, But doesn't look like the size of the V8 ones but is larger then V6's i have seen. And has plenty on dints under it which would hurt capacity.
Went over the car.
Fuel Filter.
Fuel regulator.
O2 Sensor.
Injectors.
Spark plugs.
Leads.
Oil Change.
Air filter.
Cold Air intake.
Changed T/B standard size.
Even tossed in a exhaust system.. Cat was burnt out dead.
Now get 450km local driving..
Went to Shepparton last year down the highway over 150km still sitting on full.

is it worth putting a manual in it, i think im gonna do an engine change as i susspect the motor has done well over 350,000k even tho the speedo says it done 200,000. its had the heads done on it, the little stamp on the back of the motor. tells me that. what should i pay for a complete manual converson, whats too much
i am getting around 400kms to a 60-65ltr tank. After reading over a few of your comment i am going to change the o2 sensor and water temp sensor and see how i go. Hav already given it a major service so it doesnt need that.
I have constantly got 11.9 to 13.5 out of my vp calais. A lot of highway k's i must admit but i just live driving it!..............Pete!![]()
