    Default Cheap Heat Shielding

Ok I was at a mates place last night and there were a few speedway guys there that run VN-VR commodores in modifieds and street stock.
The subject of heat shielding came up.

And they gave me a tip. Instead of buying actual heat shielding which is horridly expensive these guys use Fire Blankets!

About $30 for a fair sized rectangular section of material. Rated to the same temps as the more expensive heat shield stuff.

So I am going out today to buy some to shield my intake pipework.

Does a heat shield made from stainless steel sheet salvaged from what looked like a bar fridge door found by the side of the road waiting for council pick up count as cheap? I like to think of it as recycling.

Yeah, I got that. A fine toothed hacksaw works OK though.

try this for 0 dollars and 45 minutes work to make and secure-

The walls sit high enough to just touch the bonnet when closed, and there is very little room for heat to get into the box... the thing i love about this setup is the placement of the cai pipe, i have it running through the bumper directly to the pod, no bends or turns meaning when i blow air through the bumper area i can feel it directed straight to the pod, imagine how much gets forced in at speed on the road.

still not fully enclosed. better then nothing though. it's also the CAI that really makes or breaks a good setup

Thats pretty good too, i was thinking of somehow enclosing my pod off in tough plastic but an opening at the front just for the pipe to stick in so the air flows directly into the pod and no room to go anywhere else.

also i heard slight bends in the pipe were good for a ram effect? also vnv8 what did you make your shielding out of?

Out of an oil drip tray i had spare, cut in 4 'quarters' then got 2 quarters and bolted them together. if you know what i mean... all i did then was drill holes for the existing air box bolts and secure it... then i got some flexable 65mm pipe and secured it from the bumper to the pod.. I wouldnt say that bends are good for a cai, like i said all i have to do is blow air out of my mouth through the bar ad i can feel the air blowing on the pod, and im not exatrurating its quite noticeable. when i show people they think its quite cool..

Im going to be fitting a circular rubber piece around the intake pipe (to t/b) but other than that, theres not alot of room for hot air to get in. even though the corners arent fully boxing off the pod, i cant see any hot air going past the ignition module or around where the radiator is..

Also dont think i mentioned it but the top of the box doesnt let hot air in as it sits right on the bonnet when closed.

    Awesome idea.
I have a spare oil drain tub might give it a shot tomorrow

The alloy ones look awesome, but I dont have access to bending gear or welding gear for ali. And it probably wouldnt hurt to wrap the extractors in heat shielding underneath the alloy one anyway?
Mainly cause I know heat will speed up the deterioration of ignition leads. Then again using Heat wrap on extractors shortens their life as well.
