    Default Remove VP Steering Wheel

    Hi guys,

I've done a search for this but had no luck. I'm trying to get the steering wheel off my VP Calais and getting nowhere. I've undone the big bolt in the middle and tried pulling the wheel off by hand and i've tried bashing it off from behind with a big hammer but no luck .

Anyone here have any good tips for me I'm getting so damn frustrated with this thing . lol

    Cheers guys,

    Glen

Put the bolt halfway back on so it doesnt hit your face and keep bashing.Work your way around. It will come.

    GET A STEERING WHEEL PULLER!!!

Trust me its cheaper then letting ur dad smash it with a hammer

But really the puller is the way to go, its well worth it.

DON'T hit the steering wheel at all.

Put the nut back on as said, then start pulling and pushing (you have to be pretty forceful to get it to work)

If the wheel has never been off the car before, it will take a while, my VL took about 15 minutes of pushing/pulling trying to lever it off

See the funny thing is, I actually had it off about 3 months ago because I had to straighten it up! And it came off really easily by hand. Could it be something else causing my wheel to go off centre ? It's turned about 90deg to the left but does not seem to go any further than that.

    Cheers,
    Glen

Just read its for your calais.

Chances are you've snapped your diff cradle. reverse the car up your driveway, and see if one of the rear wheels has ALOT of camber.

as was already stated.. the best way to get it off is to loosen the nut to near the end of the thread (making sure its still on the thread so that when the wheel comes off, the nut will stop it smashing you in the face)... and then holding the steering wheel at both sides, wiggle it really hard. for example, pull with your left hand, while pushing with your right, then vise versa really quick and hard. sort of like you're boxing-left,right,left,right really quickly.

    hope that makes some sense.

sometimes they are really hard to get off, so you've gotta be pretty violent. with enough force it should come off. failing that, a steering wheel puller.

If it is his cradle like i suspect, theres no need to remove the steering wheel now.

Just finished checking out the camber and had a look at the cradle and all seems fine, camber looks all normal and no cracks in the cradle. Maybe it's worn bushes or steering rack ?

Could just be you've hit a gutter and the wheel alignment is out, but the cradle issue is hard to spot, and is only visible when the car has been reversed, if it was last driven forwards, you wont see anything different.
