Im having a weird problem with my gearbox. When im travelling between 80-100km/h, when the torque converter would normally lock up, it tries to do this a few times, but just makes weird grinding noises and fails. Eventually it will lock up, but it still feels weird. Also, when im going 80km/h, in the low end of 4th gear, the car vibrates pretty badly. All i can think of it being is a problem with the torque converter. Does this sound right?

I'd say its torque convertor related but there are other things that might be worth looking at too. Does it make a whining sort of noise when not locked but goes away when locked? not locking up could be the solenoid. vibration is a hard one could be numerous things like uni's gb mount unbalanced driveshaft centre bearing.
well there is a whining noise at 80-100 km/h, but that comes from the back of the car and im fairly certain its the diff

common problem with the vn torque converters, if your not running a cooler im not surprised it isnt stuffed... could also be centre bearing or trans mount though.
when on the highway and your off the accelerator at 100, then put your foot down is nthere a little delay then the revs drop and the cat akes off??
it does run a cooler. ill see if theres a delay when i drive it later tonight. would an auto service help at all? or will i need a new converter?

and theres another weird noise. in 1st and 2nd gear, above 2500rpm or so, there as odd noise i cant describe. when it changes gear, it almost sounds like a very quiet blow off valve.

trans service wont fix it waste of time and money, is the noise while the transmission is trying to change gears or just accelerating?
just accelerating. and the noise i think is diff whine only seems to exist at anything above 0% throttle. when i dont have my foot on the pedal, you cant really notice it. it sounds like its coming from the diff, but i dunno if its a tranny noise that is resonating to the back of the car maybe

*floor falls out*
stocky.. time to drop a new box in it! T56 gogogogo
ive never heard the trans making a blowoff moise before im lost there, if you loeave the lever in third gear and lightly accelerate up hils/under load does it make the grinding/vibration? if so previous experience tells me it is the converter.
my car has the delay thing when going back onto the throttle, that means the converter is on its way out yeah?
chances are, the heat of the th700's without a cooler literally warps the converter.
Is the breather hose free of debris?
wheres the hose? i know SFA about transmissions

The grinding noise is bad bits going round in the tranny. The wagon made this noise for a few days, then the vibrations started. Then dead tranny. The mechanic said it was rubbish in the clutches from lack of a service (maybe a few years without a service).
Time for a replacement transmission.

did yours only do it around 90km and above? it only does it when its locking the converter. the rest of the time it feels fine. no other problems

have a looksie at the vr manual conversion thread that just popped up...
i can swap ya the guards for a pedal box if ya want.

i cant tell what the problem is. it doesnt seem bad now, only a slight vibration around 90km/h. seemed to be worse when i had passengers in the back. bought some new oil i might change it over the weekend
