Question Would dings in the 'Y' section reduce power?

If my exhaust has a few dings in the 'Y' section, just after the extractors/headders (worst being quite deep) would this be restricting my exhaust system? It just seems logical that it would be but what do you guys think?

    Cheers.
    Matt.

    In short - no.
what else is done to the car? It'd have to be pretty bad for you to notice it.

yes to it reducing power, but no more than having your arm out the window or something! i'm also assuming dings mean something small as opposed to it be squashed by 50% or something

It won't kill any more power than an engine bay "hot air induction" pod filter if you have one. There is enough restriction in your exhaust with the cat and two mufflers (if it's stock) without having more restrictions in it like that. The 'Y' pipe is a fairly critical part of your system, I built a system for a customers VS V6 on the weekend and i used the 'Y' piece as an opportunity to put in expansion chambers, twin 2" opened out to twin 2.5" merged into a high flow 2.5" cat, then a 2.5" mandrel system back. Sounds nice and it goes a hell of a lot better. So long story short, I'd recommend you replace your 'Y' section at least.

Yes it will be impeding exhaust flow, but will you notice it? Probably not, unless it is squashed flat like vlv8vic has said.

the factory "Y" pip has been flattened out at the factory where it runs under the trans (i assume to maintain ground clereance). get rid of it. if you have adecent aftermarket exhaust it will be the biggest restriction

Yeah i just fitted a set of hi-tech headers and i have a hi flow cat and 2.5" system with a single sports muffler after the cat. The Y section has a couple of dings that are very close to 50% squashed, but i'll end up replacing it in a couple of weeks. Just wanted to know if it would be seriously restricting it, not worries about 0.5 of a kw or anything.
Thanks for the feedback guys, much appreciated as allways!
    Cheers.

So they were S/H headers then? You should be able to buy the Y pipe separately.

    i totally disagree....

of course it matters, its like squashing a garden hose, its going to come out at higher pressure but not as quick

    lol i disagree again.....

if you squash a garden hose, it increases pressure before the pinch point because of the decrease in flow, provided the source is constantly providing that flow.
the water increases in velocity past the pinch point with decreased flow.
