My car (89 VN V6 auto) has started to smoke when i start her up, she takes a few seconds to crank, always starts first go though, would a service fix this also i think when i drop her down to 3rd when im over taking she smoked a bit.
I dont thrash my car.
Thats all right, thats ok, I drive a commodore anyway!!!!
When it blows at start up is it Blue (Oil Smoke), Black (Fuel Smoke) or white (Transmission fluid)? Vacuum Modulator if it's the white, Running Rich if it's black, Valve Stem seals if it's blue. A few things could be causing it to run rich at start-up/peak revs.
I think your on the right track, do a service including leads and see if it's still smoking like Cheech and Chong.

thanks jake, it looks like the fuel smoke one, my mechanic minded mate said because it cranks for a few seconds the fuel dosnt get bunt up properly and hits the catalytic converter is he right
thanks

Sounds right on the money to me Salem
It's over-priming whilst cranking over.
My 2c anyway.
Jake
My money is on injectors Has this been progressively happening more and more over a period of time?
Try putting some injector cleaner through the system and see whether that helps as a temporary fix.
Could be contributing because it's old....
But as I said, because it's not firing straight away the ECU is over-priming, spark is your problem *puts money on the table*.
Flooding in old school terms.
Jake
If you are going to use an injector cleaner, don't skint on the quality. Avoid Wynns and STP, in my experience they are total crap. Talk to the boys at your parts shop and they will put you onto a good one, should be $20 at most anyway. If you must skint then skint the way of Valvoline, seems to do the trick alright.
