    Default Removing VN Ignition Barrel

    Gday Guys,

I know how to do it but....i dont have the key to turn it to the on position so the barrel will come out so it defeats the purpose. after much ****ing around and frustration will a large screwdriver i snapped half of the inside of the barrel. I dont think that will make a difference though as im not trying to salvage the barrel :P

How can i remove the barrell with no key?

    Thanks Guys

If you bend the steering lock out of the way with a crowbar it can be removed. You will also find that ignition barrel bolts will snap when your trying to undo them, this is a factory standard to stop theifs stealing your car, you will then need a pin punch & hammer to remove the snapped bolt..

i dont know if solex lock would fit straight to your door handle? i think there more for vb-vl where the barrel is separate to the handle and can be installed easily.

Hey guys, I need to take my barrel out of my VP aswell,

From what I have read I understand that there is a "slot" somewhere I need to push a screwdriver into with the key at the "ON" position ? And I have looked at the ignition thorougly myself and have no idea where this slot is.

Can anyone give me some some detailed instruction on how to remove ? That would be great, then I can pick up a new barrel next weekend and get my car into roadworthy condition once again

    Thanks Guys

There is a small hole about 2/3's of the way down the barrel on the outside. With the key in the ON position, insert a small pin into the hole, a paper clip will work, and just pull the barrel out.

Thanks mate, gave it a try but barrel wouldent budge. I don't know if it matters but, when I turn the key in the barrel it turns loosely from OFF to ACC to ON, it doesent actually engage ACC on the way to ON. So I think the insides of the barrel must be pretty stuffed.

Would this affect remove the barrel ?

No, the fact that you can still move the key makes removal easy. It has to be in the ON position to access the catch that holds it in place. Try moving the key to slightly before and after ON and try the pin. It will come out, it just has to be in the exact spot.

sorry to drag up an old thread but i bought a statesman the had been stolen recovered. now im trying to swap the barrel with my vn one so i can drive it. the vn one ive removed, because i have the keys to turn it to the on position..
the statesman one i cant remove because i cant turn the thing. ive butchered it and even snapped an old key trying to snap it into position.

i was told that ive i stick a hole punch into the 2mm hole and break the steering lock i can pry it out but ive had no luck.

ive got the horn switch housing off and can see down the column, is there a way to push the steering lock down from inside the column or should i keep trying?

try spray some rp7 or similar into the barrel and let it sit for a couple minutes than insert a mid size flat head screwdriver ( one with a decent grip best) and attempt it that way.. it worked on my old wagon i bought of the wreckers for a project car if not try finding a cheap locksmith in your area to come to you

its a stolen recoverd and it was drivable when i picked it up so theres a good chance the locking tab is snapped anyway. it seems a pretty random code because ive got a box of keys that would start almost any vn but none are working on this one so the wafers must be pretty good, i can take it into wirk but its the easter weekend and noones around.. reely wanted to get it going before orthadox easter next week lol
