I might be getting a series 1 vn calais for a song and its done a head gasket(V6).Told it doesnt go so im wondering if a series 2 motor or a VP one goes in without any messing around.

It depends on what box you have in it i think.
S1 vn's had different cranks for different boxes.
There is a thread here about it, just do a search.

Adam there isnt much different being an auto you wont need to change the box. You will need to get a radiator with a cap and S1 run the pressurized tanks. everything is pretty basic i cant think of anything major that will change.

coilpacks and dfi are different but you can still use them, radiator really is about all you will need to change, apart from your radiator hoses obviously!

man i just put in a vn s1 into my s2 vp using the original wiring from the vp but using the vn s1 computer and memcal !the only difference with the wiring to the computer was i had to rotate the 2 harness's 180 degrees to plug it in as the vp s2 has 2 depression tabs on it but it all works (climate control, level 3 dash etc as my vp is a luxury pack berlina). so you shouldnt have any dramas bro
