Hey guys. i just bought a vp fairly cheap but its not running.
i have tried almost everything i can think of to get it going here are some details for you to have a look at.
has spark on all 6 cylinders.
has fuel pressure.
the computer has no codes logged.
i noticed earlier when i was trying to get it going that the crank angle sensor is really loose. when it is disconnected it wont fire at all.
but when its connected it tries to start but only does so for a second or two.
hopefully you guys can help me with some of this.
im not sure how to check.
it has a fair bit. but when i bought it i was told the fuel pump had gone.
but i hit the crap out of the fuel tank and it now primes.
could that be the problem?
it very well could be - it might not be able to provide as much pressure as it needs!
Can't say for sure though - best thing would be to get/borrow a fuel pressure gauge and t piece it into the feed side of the fuel rail, that will let you know for sure. (the inlet is the side without the pressure regulator!)
it's also possible you might have a loose connection somewhere? maybe even the anti theft switch might be a bit dodgy?
if you have correct fuel pressure (should be 45psi-ish from memory), the next thing I would check is to make sure the injectors are pulsing, either by 'feeling them' when starting, or by jamming a 12v LED into the injector plugs and seeing if it flashes. (it might only work inserted one way tho)
so you dont think it would be the crank angle sensor from preventing it to start?
i have a spare fuel pump that i know works. its just the hassle of putting it in lol.
or it could be a blocked fuel filter.
oh i forgot about your loose cas story sorry.
how do you mean it's 'really loose'? it's hidden well behind the balancer isn't it? if you're getting reliable consistent spark it means that you're getting a signal from the cas
it's possible that if it's "really loose" it might have shifted over a few degrees, but then it should still fire just would run pretty yuck
well i can wobble it pretty freely with my hand.
ill get another cas and another fuel filter and see if they solve the problem. then move onto the fuel pump then the injectors.
cheers for your help mate.
the cam angle sensor sends a signal to the computer then the signal goes out to the spark and a nother to the injectors, As Luke said, If you have spark you have a signal comming in from the cas and if it gives a bit of a fire you could assume the injectors are firing,
It sounds to me like you have a dodgy fuel pump, try putting a couple of spoon fulls of petrol in the manifold, via the throttle body and see if it runs for a second of two on that, if it does you could assume the fuel filter and or pump is at fault...
some times I have seen the wiring at the bottom of the coil packs curroded , giving them a wriggle can help find this out, and I have seen the plug @ the ecu curroded, remove it and give it a spray with contact cleaner or just crc.
Also check the plug leads and make sure that they are going to the right plugs.
Good luck
get some aero start, wind the motor while spraying it into the inlet manifold,if it runs ,its fuel,if not i would check the coil pack ,if their is gue coming out the bottom the pack its dead,if not check the plug, if that is not it, then the next thing that goes is the crank sensor
Check that the outer section of the harmonic balancer hasnt slipped. From memory the no1 firing position has a wider gap so the puter knows where no1 cylinder is at. If it slips it will be firing before or after its supposed to.
