kk i just bought a 1989 bv berlina for a whopping 250.00 of a old mate who i used to live next door two
now i went down to look at it the other day and he shows me receipts for a new radiator ( 1month ago) and a compression test ( 4 days ago) and says that it was losing a tiny amount of water / coolant but he wasnt sure where.
i check the rocket cover cap and sure enuff milky white buildup, and theirs oil in the radiator and resovair , i also noticed a little bit of constant white smoke coming out,
so im thinking a blown head gasket but would this not have shown up on his compression test which come back all clear???
any ideas / help greatly appreciated
also i asked and he hasnt noticed any performance loss with his driving around town
He didnt pour coolant in the rocker cover by any chance lol. Apparently head gasgets are extremely rare to go on a VN V6, maybe you have a rooted Intake manifold gasket instead?
Not necessarily. A head gasket can leak coolant but still be OK under a compression test. It may be gone at an oil gallery, not at the cylinder. The only way to be sure is to pull it apart and look. Oil in the water and water in the oil is usually a good indication but, it may be just the inlet manifold gasket too.
kk ill have a look at the inlet gasket tomoz i never thought of that
thanks guys
check all ur bolts are tight and actually there, when i bought my car one was actually missing. :S go figure.
all bolts were there, and the gasket looked in decent condition i guess maybe this is the head gasket /sigh heading down to repco today to get a full gasket kit
ty guys
no mate, you just pull both heads and manifold off as one.... lol, just kidding, yeah. may aswell just pull it all apart and see what you find. nothing to lose right? it was only $250 lol. i got my VN for $500, but its in fairly good nick lol.
woot got half way back from repco today and got pulled over by the nice boys in blue asking rather rudlly why oil was coming from my exhaust pipe.... i luaghed and went to look believing it would just be smoke but nope actual liquid oil coming from my exhaust
one 60.00 tow truck ride home later and a nice yellow sticker i have another thing to find any idea on this one .. i still havnt even bothered to look at the car yet since it got home
lol not your luck mate, gotta laught at sh1t like this tho its only 250, the guy could have taken it in and got 4-500 from wreckers for it lol, just pull her apart and find out whats the go start with inlet manifold sound like head gasket but if u get a VRS gasket set and do it all thats the way to go. good luck

Well, sounds like either a head or a intake mani gasket. Replace both. head gaskets and do the intake manifold one, unless you can clearly see its the intake mani you may be able to skip the heads...Time for opperation!
pulled her open this morning yeah it was th head gasket or rather what was left of one, got it flat tested this morning also and all good there so about to pull it all back together again now and doing a major service while im under the hood save me coming back to it anytime soonand then hopefully get this canary off tomorrow... ty all for your suggestions
still wondering how it passed a compression test lmfao
good job mate, now take the heads in get em cleaned up and shaved up the compression while your there 40 thou would go good![]()

How hard is it to do the head gaskets on a V6?Im looking at a series 1 VN Calais on the weekend for $450(prob less) and im told it got hot and now has oil and water mixed.
in response to adam69 it can seem daunting at first but its not really that hard but if your car has a blown head gasket i highly suggest getting the head flat tested before just swapping out a gasket ( makes sure the heads not warped , cracked)
a gregorys manual is also a good thing just to have around or if you got a holden dealership in your area that is willing to photocopy a couple of pages from the holden workshop manual thats even better
