The 89 Green sedan did a 360 in the wet while exiting Colinnaides the other day. The Daughter said the car did a big fish tail and then went up the gutter backwards putting a big dent in the rim. The tyre survived.
Looks to be no major damage but for her pride.
We sat down and talked it over on how she came to spinning a car out. (usually the 17 year old cant be told - anything) but she sat and talk - I did not get sworn at (at last a normal conversation)
As it turns out she nailed it out of the corner and even with a miss in the engine she managed to get the car to go around 1 & 1/2 times and not do any real harm. Very aggressive for a P plate driver of 3 months.
So now it has hit home that you can come unstuck real easy.
I put 2 215's TZ100 Firestones on the rear to replace the 205 Turenza's and hopefully gain a little more grip for her.
Looks like she will need it.![]()

Good to hear that both car and daughter survived unscathed! Just look on the bright side - at least it wasn't the Wagon.![]()

It is good for a young driver to get a scare like this. It gets ride of the "I am invincible" attitude and makes them start to listen.
Exactly the same thing happened to me when I was on my p's
When my kids get older and start driving I really want to take them to a skid pan and show them how easy it is to loose control of the car, I think they would learn a lot.

Hmmm funny you should say that - as it turns out the eldest daughter has also spun the wagon out 1 month into getting her P's too (found this out last night). Had the car sideways across 2 lanes blocking traffic in both directions for a while. She did not say anything as she thought I'd take the car off her.
Slowed her down thankfully.

Don't make your daughter sound too cool, all the youngins on here will be after her.
My Mum managed to loop her 1977 Celica around in the rain and gently grind it's belly across the median concrete/tiles in the rain one time so I except it's easy enough to do in a VN if you have a heavy foot that doesn't back off quickly.

Yes I think we got through - At long last.![]()
And as it's her first car you expect it to gain a few nic's and dents along the way. Too bad the mags were almost new when I got the car for her with no gutter rash at all. Now 2 rims are now - well 1 has some rash & 1 a big dent in the edge of the rim about 20mm long and 8mm deep. Should be OK - it has not bent the rim - they tested it when changing the tyres.

Ive done this once of twice, happens to everyone i think. Havent crashed from it though, just looped it and made it look like thats what i wanted to do, i was driveing a FWD but.
I've never looped my VP around but I have landed all crossed up in the wrong lane quite a few times, allways my fault in a moment of stupidity when no one was around
I thought the engine may have been on it's last legs with the miss it had, but no - poweer to burn. The injector cleaner has helped lots - still a minor miss but still enough power to loop the car and get it up a gutter - and this was on a blind exit "T" junction were you almost have to stop to see if anyoe is comming from the right. She gave it plenty by the look of it and was around before she could blink. When I got the car the Brigestones on the back were new but dont offer enough grip in the wet with the tune that it has.

did the front or rear wheel(s) hit the gutter? if so you might want to check the alignment of the diff.
Lucky it's you that has to listen to his accent and not me, it grates hard on me even after being out of England 150 years :0
Sad to hear about the spin - but very good to hear that all is mostly ok!
just double check the panhard rod mounts and stuff - apparently they have a nasty habit of tearing off!
at least you didn't get the "Swerved to miss a dog" excuse! - those stupid dogs just seem to run out of nowhere - in front of inexperienced drivers, in the wet, just after a corner all the time!...
I've looped a car more times than I can count/remember- but not in 'public/traffic' as such - after a while you get into the habit of hooking reverse, mashing the gas, and J turning out of it.

They had a good look over the car at Expressway Tyres. Car still drives straight so looks to have come out of it OK.
At the time I wanted her to think it could be many hundreds of dollars damage if anything was bent.
And the Commodores dont like going up gutters at all - so could have been a great deal worse had she hit other cars or smashed up the front end. Going up the gutter backwards probably saved the front end.

Spot on, I was the same, Stopped me in my tracks fast.
Cops pulled me up days after my P's, They were hard on me, Embarrassed me, Shammed me, IT was the best thing ever.
Also glad to hear no one was hurt and car is fine..
I went for 225's on 15" on the VP, And that has better grip then my Berlina, In all conditions.

Hahaha oh wow, it's ALWAYS possible to get the end out on one of those things, heyEspecially for a novice driver who thinks more power = go faster, without thinking about the wheelspin inbetween

Lucky she is ok! Glad she got a fright lol hopefully wont be trying that again.
I did a similar thing (a little embarrassed to admit it *hides*) but about 3 weeks ago I was on my own, of a night, wet road, off to get fuel, got to the corner of my street to turn right, then the "Evil Christie" says "Go on give it ****" new car, kind of proud, stupid me did and next thing you know I'm facing the opposite direction to what I should have been, and missed the gutter by at least an inchNEVER will I do that again!
The difference between the VX Sedan and the VZ wagon is HUGE and I learnt that the hard way lol! I should of just asked Craig....
i assume the road was wet
i find the roads down there really dangerous, the round about where you can cross over the train track bridge was really bad until they resurfaced it
i have found my self sliding when i wasnt trying, my old woman was in the car too at the time and she crapped her self, corrected it just before i got close to the lamp post on the side.
also the exit near the train staition is really bad, seen my cousin loop out but he was trying to be a hero
