    Default VN bumpers

    hey guys,
i'm posting for a friend who has a '91 Imperial Blue VN exec, his front and rear bumpers are faded and is wanting options on how to make them the same color as the car,

i suggested get some imperial blue VP bumpers, or paint them (but ive noticed that if your paint vn bumpers they tend to fade in matter of weeks)

what would ya'll suggest he does and what price it should be?

    thanks!

If he waits long enough the whole car will fade to suite the Bars.Just about every commodore painted Imperial Blue will fade and peel due to a paint mix stuff up . I had aVN that color and the boot bonnet and roof faded to white ,well almost. If you prep them properly first before painting them there should be no probs.

It wont fade or crack if you use proper spray can paints (if thats your method), get a paint mixed up with flex compound so the paint can heat up and flex without cracking or fading.

If you are finding it hard to get a color match you can always paint the sills and bumper black (or color to suit car) maybe a silver 2 tone cheap job?

Attached is imperial blue straight off the gun, it kind of looks purple in the photo, but it will lighten up. Most imperial blue Vn's left hav e a faded grey over them.... actually ill attach a copy of an original imperial blue vn.

Bumpers are pretty easy to paint. Just follow my easy steps.

    1) Remove bumpers(s) from car

    2) Clean with water, to remove all dirt and whatnot

    3) Use a wax and grease remover to prep the surface

    4) Spray on a Plastic primer (Use a whole can) and Get a brand that's NOT clear when it goes on. That way you can tell where you have applied primer.

    5) Let the primer dry, they spray on your colour of choice. Hint: Get a paint shop to match the paint to your car, so the bumpers will match the rest of the fading paint.

    6) Use a can and a bit, if you can, in even layers. If your apply the paint to heavy, it will run. This part will determine how good your bumper will look, so take your time.

    7) Once completely dry, Seal the paint with some clear top coat. 1 can should do both bumpers.

    8) Re attach bumpers to the car, and your done!

This was the method i used to do mine, and they are still fine, hav'nt faded, and it's been nearly 2 years.

    Any more questions, just ask.

Ok, instead of starting a new thread, I thought i'd just ask here. I've got a new set of bumpers for my VN. They have an original VN SS bodykit attached to them. The front bumper is smooth and isn't like my exec bumper at all.

How do i go about getting the paint off, so i can paint them the same colour as my car??? Also the front bumper has a large chip out of it. Whats the best thing to use to fill this up?

Also whats the best way to get paint off the sideskirts???

Lots of questions, but i'm not all that great with prep work.

I repainted my sons in the walkingshaw blue & they come up looking sweet.Just rubbed them back, primered them up ,then shoved on a few coats of blue then clear & they still shine like the day they were painted...
