A real head scratcher
G'day Guys!
I'm pulling my hair out on this one!
In the last couple of weeks, my 6 cyl ute has been giving me grief. It idles ok, but I would be driving along as normal and then it will start to jilt as if it has a miss or as if it is starving for fuel. Then all of a sudden it starts to run fine again. And then plays up again. It only plays up a little during the day, though at night time it plays up more.
I have replaced the fuel pump towards the end of last year. And replaced the fuel filter, spark plugs, cleaned the throttle body and tipped a bottle of injector cleaner in this week, though no improvement.
Any idea guys????
Thanks heaps in advance!!!

I'd guess you're using more power at night with all your lights on, so I'd consider looking at voltage drops, maybe start with alternator. On a different tack, how are your injectors

Thanks for your reply!
The alternator is fine. I believe the injectors are good, because the jilt problem would be constant if the injectors were clogged, wouldn't it?

What about your leads, give it a rev in the dark and look for high voltage sparks around the leads. I would consider replacing them anywayz if they are a bit old just as a cheap elimination of them possibly being the problem.

If you have a mate with a similar car ask if you can borrow his coil packs and module for a couple hours and then swap them over and have a test.
Also check for a fault code.

I would buy a set of leads if yours are old, its good to keep buy new leads anyway, and if it fixes it then great! If not the leads then coil packs?

ebay has them for s2vn -> vs for 45 dollars, i don't know what engine the vg has in it (s1 or s2) the coil packs are different for s1 (squarer) also before you go buying a new coil pack, it could also be the dfi.
i haven't pulled one apart so i can't elaborate, just that the dfi plate is under the coil packs, i think they work in conjuction

The CAS could be on the way out too.
But the jolting while driving on the flat - turned out to be the DFI/coils on the 88wagon if thats any help.

If you have the cash, theres msd coils which can be bought individually that slot into the v6 style coilpack configuration.

yeah pretty much, but if you do that, thicker leads, a bigger gapped plug along with the usual memcal and exhaust mods you got yourself some extra horsies even if it is limited. I dont like stock coils they seem to wear out prematurely for some reason...
