^^^^^^ theres the question :P i know where its located, is it any hard to remove it.. i gotta replace mine its been dead for awhile now...aaa year? i think its time to change it its no fun driving without a speedo
has anyone changed theres?
helpp would be appreciated cheerss![]()
I know the guts of it just unscrews. Grab and twist. The shell that's bolted onto the transmission, appears to be clipped on by one bolt and a clamp, similar to a distributor. Not sure what it connects with inside the transmission though. But I know the majority of it will just twist out![]()

thankss heaps morton.. one more question is it easy to break something inside of the thing while doing it?
no just twist it. its threaded on there. and there is a little spinny thing in an auto it is about 2cm long and a manual has an extension on it. that slides over the auto one.
Just ran into the garage and took a picture of the one off my V8 T700. Behold

haha morton thats oily as what happened there??? yea i know what it looks like u shouldnt of man but thanks better view i guess :P
edit: u should of taken it out while u where out there hahahaha
cool saves me doing the same thing tomorrow.
Yeah, it's a bit greasy. I havn't cleaned the old auto stuff yet since my conversionThat's eighteen years of grease I guess ^_^
I'm not sure exactly how to remove the speed sensor body from within the trans. I suspect it may involve removing the extension housing though.

i duno what it is morton if the sensor is what u where holding in ur hand.. i thought it was something to do with the thing thats bolted on the trans.. i would clean the sensor with a rag wd40 etc.. the speedo would work for a bit and then die.. i went to the wreckers i cant find a sensor thats similar to my one
Is it possible, just by some freaky silly chance, that the wires on the end of your plug are a bit worn? I've noticed on a number of cars that they're all exposed, and a lot are starting to fray, especially on the edge of the sensor housing.

is it broken is it suppose to be this short..
it looks like a spiral like a drill shape.. on all the vn-vps at the wreckers there like a long rectangle shaped thing
Yeah... dude, that's stuffedEven through the shroud of that abysmal photo, I can tell it's knackered ^_^

haha yea somethings wrong with my fone it wont focus or flash grrr.. if its broken i think the other piece is inside the transmission sidethis is bad yea? coz i tryed putting another one in it b4 n i couldnt push it all the way in GRR does this mean its screwed bad?
hahaha oh wow. Can you get in there with a long pair of tweezers and pull the rest of it out? Looks like it got caught on something and twisted.

haha thats gonna be impossible pulling it out if its twister n broke off there.. then that means its stuck in theree forever.. well ill try but i hope i take it out .. thanks man for the help :P
Hehehe no worries. I wish I knew more. All I know is that the speedo drive gear is probably hooked nicely into something inside the extension housing.![]()

**** THAT dont look good.
the one on my t5 was ****ed. the wires were exposed.
so i got one off a mates auto box and found it required the extra pin.thingo.
With reference to Morton's picture:
The speed sensor (that Morton is holding) is driven by a gear that meshes onto another gear pressed onto the transmission output shaft.
If you undo the 10mm headed bolt, the gear and the plastic housing it sits in can be removed as a unit. That will make it easier to extract the speed sensor drive pin if there's a bit broken off inside.
There is an 'O' ring that seals the plastic housing to the transmission extension housing and it's a fair bet that that will be old, hard and not sealing very well = a new one required. To get the old seal out of the groove in the plastic housing, I find a large pin or needle or pick works well. It's easy to damage the housing though, so some care is needed.
There is another seal (Holden part# VS1945, I think) inside the speed sensor which can also leak = also advisable to replace that (if using a used speed sensor) while it's apart.
Cleaning the outside of the trans. before removing anything will make it easier to avoid getting dirt inside the trans.
Lube the new 'O' ring with auto oil (there will be plenty pooled inside the trans.) and wipe the sealing surface inside the trans. clean before installing.
yea thats what i decided to do, i took it off 2days ago n going wreckers tomorow to get the part.. its much easier this way![]()
ok... maybe stupid comment... but is it worth putting another old (and potentially about to die) one in? what is the price difference with a newey? it will certainly be dearer but at least you know it will last a fair while... cheers, pete.
i replaced mine when i converted. it looked sus but i didnt chance it failing on me, cant remember how much i paid, im sure i got shafted nicely because it was OEM.
i was quoted $150 for a brand new sensor
