Default VN L3 Calibration - How To!

This is a scan from the good old Holden hand book.

So people driving a VN with the L3 dash this is what you use to get the trip computer spot on.

Good luck its worth the effort.

    To reset computer:

Hold down the Reset button and press the Mode button.

Also DTE is calculated every 2 minutes.

Here is the test mode to show fuel flow rate per hour. Should be between 1 - 5 Lts/Hr.

The second scan if from one of the proper Holden service manuals.

I want to know if the flow rate is at 5 instead of 1 or 2 does this mean the car is going to use lots more fuel or not.

On looking at it if the cars hourly flow rat is 5 litres instead of say 2 - it's gunna use lots more fuel.

Now does the hourly flow rate at idle say how the regulator is operating - like if it's 1 regulator is good - and 5 = buggered regulator?

Well to give you an idea, a VE Berlina has a rate of about 2.3ltrs/hour on first start up. After it's warmed up it sits around 1.1-1.3ltrs/hour. Not sure if this info is relevant

can you please explain this better to me? sorry im shocking at maths sometimes

    cal.(new)=cal.(old)x fuel use(trip computer)
    ---------------------
    actual(service station pump)

and also why is it 625? once ya do that calculation will it work out to be a number say like 638?

This is how I read it.

Lets say you fill up each week for 5 weeks 50 Litres each time = 250L

    251.5 (TC)
    250.0 (Pump)

    251.5 div by 250 = 1.006

    1.006 x 625 = 628.75

    or

    255 (TC)
    250 (P)

    255 Div by 250 = 1.02

    1.02 x 625 = 637.5

    or

    249 (TC)
    250 (P)

    249 Div by 250 = 0.996

    0.996 x 625 = 622.5

    or

    245 (TC)
    250 (P)

    245 Div by 250 = 0.98

    0.98 x 625 = 612.5

Fuel flow balances the fuel put into the car to the amount the trip computer says been pumped out.

so given all that...u would have to write down how much went into the tank by the pump reading & how much was used by the Trip Computer reading before resetting the TC.........or would u just write down the pump reading & leave the TC till you have filled up at least 5 times before resetting

    that sound right?

It can be reset each time - you would need to collect the 2 sets of numbers each fill.

The book says 5 fills to get a good balanced number.

You should fill from the same place - pump even and the same way too. 2 clicks - 3.

I filled up today after using 64 liters (I put 13l in the other night before someones points out the obvious). The distance traveled was 610km. This was after 1 long trip on the freeways from the Valley to Epping and back, around 370km's....the rest was round town with a few trips to close by towns on the freeway.
Another 4 fills and I'll be checking the calibration.

You can do the calculation for each fill - just dont change the trip computer until you get the 5 tanks of info.

I tried that by starting with the original full tank of 63l, then add the 13l I put in the other night = 76l....so if I take off the 64 the TC said was used it must mean I had 12l in my tank still. That sound right? And today it took 53l to fill up.

So if I've calculated right the equation should read like this:

    51 / 53 = 0.9622 x 625 = 601.375

That good or bad......or just way out?

    The numbers should be 13L + 53L = 66L

What did the TC say when the 13 & 53 went in?

Also if you press and hold the reset button - 2 modes give the setting 625 for flow and distance. The other one will say how many litres are left in the tank.

thought I buggered it up lol.....don't know what the TC was saying when I put the 13l in, but I didn't reset anything at that time. when I put the 53l in today it was saying 64l used. So is this right:
    64 (TC)
    66 (Pump)

    64 div by 66 = 0.9696

    0.9696 x 625 = 606

    Yep you got it.

Very early numbers though - it will be much closer when you add more refills to the total.

Should I be using liters remaining or liters used? I'm taking it that it should be liters used.

Yep Lts used. The flow rate is the way the TC balances the fuel in/fuel out

so even thou this only after 1 refill, how far would 606 be out and which way? The lower flow rate would mean I'm actually using more fuel than the TC is saying?

Correct - but that can also be upto 1 lt variation on fillup. Like when you try to get the nearest dollar and go over and you can some times get 1 more dollars worth in.
