Who makes the best cam and chip package for a 5 liter 304 that is still ok on fuel and not too rough.app, 1,500 to 5000 Rpm..
Check out the Crow Cam website, or the Crane Cam website. They both have packages that you can whack in. You may be better off just getting the cam put in then getting a custom chip written in the dyno. That way it is tuned just right for your engine and car. Every car is different with little mods that make all the difference when added up. The chip that they give you will be based on a particullar set of mods to get the results and be a little reserved to accomodate a wider range of peoples induvidual mods.
Cheers Slooth, Have looked at both + come they all look ok. Was hoping for a few who have already done this to point out any problems with these off the shelf packages.Custom tuning should be better but we all have off days& some are better than others.thanks.
A lot of the time to get the best out of these packages you need to do some mods. I knoe cause I almost did the same thing. I already have the free flowing exhaust, twin cats and extractors as well as a freed up intake as well. But the biggest problem is the requirement of uping the compression, with many of these kits requiring a minimum 9.0:1 to get things really happening and to reach their quoted power rating. This is the only problem I have seen without actually doing the kit.
Otherwise these kits are designed to be pretty simple to put in.
Hi Slooth, Yeah you are spot on, as you know the extractors and HSV exhaust already on the senator will flow what I require.A bit more grunt from 1500 to 5000 rpm.I did not mention about the heads but intended to get them straightened up.Car has only done 115.000ks.so there is not a lot of wear else where.Borrowed a pod filter for a long drive, I dont believe there was any improvement at all over the hsv unit just more noise.cheers
Just be careful with the heads as they need a lot taken off them to up the compression to 9.0:1+. The better, but more expensive way is to get different pistons. Shaving the heads can present problems in other areas. This is why I am waiting until the whole engine needs a freshen up before I do these mods.
The Holden V8 needs a big pod filter to make a difference, with the majority of the ones out there restricting air flow. The 5.0 can swallow some air. I opened up the standard box in mine and replaced the standard filter with a better one and also replaced the pipe from the airbox to the throttle body with a straight piece of PVC to reduce restriction. Doing this made an improvement to my car, more so in the top end. The car reved easier. By keeping the standard box I'm not breathing so much hot air from the engine bay like the pod filters do.
