    Default VN brake lines

Took the wagon in for inspection. They found that it had rust in the brake lines. Not the sort caused by wet brake fluid (inside) but on the outside. Ended up replacing the lot.

Is this common? Or is it just me?

all depends on what owners have done with the car, if they have lived on the beach it wouldnt surprise.

Something is very wrong if you have brake lines that are rusted internally. FWIW I just installed braided lines on the front and the pedal is a ****load better.

did u replace them with new ones or just a set from the wreckers?...If new, where from and how much? I'd like new brake & fuel lines for the VN I'm rebuilding from the ground up.

yeah mate i have had a couple cars need new lines over the year, a old landrover from the beach and a rusty arsed corolla.
It is not that uncommon but not as much as the old cars due to better manufacturing procedures.
Places like brake mart cant make them for you, you just take in the old one and they copy them.

Should have said ON the brake lines. Looks like some of the rust might have been caused when water from burst pipes got on them in front of the drivers feet. But further back was just as bad.

With the price of stainless steel being so cheap these days, wonder if there are some being made?

?? S/S cheap??? When did that happen? Some surface rust is fine and to be expected. If there is deep pitting then they should be replaced.

Thanks for that centy.....there is a bloke in Foster, Vic. that builds trailers who said he can make them up if he had an old set to work from...but I'll see about brake mart to compare prices, but where will I find them?

$75 rrp usually for braided adr approved caliper lines. $40 per metre for stainless steel brake tubing (forgot the name) Got quoted about $600 to replace all metal brake lines with stainless lines. Not that cheap!

when you get under the car just follow the lines and see if theres any surface rust and have a go at it with a wire brush then spray some fish oil on them..

this is what i did a year or so ago ...

flushing brake fluid in lines every year or so will stop rusting from inside out ..
Vn executive 1990 200,000kms as of 13/6/08 , oil changes every 5000kms since it rolled out the factory , strut brace for hard cornering, kn pod filter, Ngk iridiums sports exhaust..what else can I say I love my holden
