G'day I own a vp berlina series 2 and have owned it for the past year and found it very reliable for its age. but I noticed about a month or 2 ago the engine started to make a ticking sound when i started the car (very loudly) and it would continue to tick when I accelerated and even when I took my foot of the accelerator it would still tick but not as loud. it eventually stopped when i was coming up to a set of lights (slowly stopped ticking and disappeared, strange!) A few months later the ticking started up again, eventually stopped again after i drove it for 5 minutes but ticks for 2 or 3 seconds everytime I start the car. the car has recently been serviced a month ago and oil is clean and topped up! does anyone know or heard anything like this before?
cheers.
sticky or buggered lifter does it tick on idle.

yeh for a few seconds, sounds like its coming from the back of the engine but I'm not entirely sure
could be a lifter
could be freddy krugar stuck in your engine trying to claw his way out![]()
Sounds like a lifter, I have the same noise, i just havent goten around to replaceing it yet. So im not 100% sure it is, but Theres a very good chance it is.
Oh same place aswell, ( from rear of engine ) drivers side..
It's possible that it's just valvetrain rattle. My VP used to tick on startup for a few seconds - nothing to worry about.
Just hope it isn't a lifter, and hope that it doesn't get worseJust pulled a mate's motor apart on Sunday because a lifter had siezed in there. The bottom of it had flayed out, and we couldn't pull the bastard out - ended up having to rip the cam out, stick my hand in there, and drop the lifter into the motor and pull it out that way. Lucky it was a lifter on Cylinder 1 too, otherwise it would have been an engine-out job

Here's hoping your car is a V6, too, because getting the cam out of a V8 means removing the aircon condensorFun times to be had.

That's a handy toolbut believe me when I say greenfoam, this lifter was flared out BADLY. I'm talking an extra 8mm total diameter at the base
No amount of pulling force was going to get that lifter out through the top. We tried for a while with a slide hammer. The roller at the base was broken in half - I can only assume the other half of it is in the sump - and the lobe on the cam had been completely shot
