hi all. i just bought a vn 5 speed executive.. if you remember it was on ebay in sa for 650.. its cream...
anyway i have a problem ..
you have to push the clutch almost too the floor to be able to get it into first... and if you try reverse it just grinds... the clutch does not slip at all as i have given it some real hell just to check...
can the cable be adjusted (if so how)
or could it be a problem with this plastic bearing im reading about
(i searched for 2 hours to find an answer before posting)
any help would be great as this is an awesome car.. totally standard with only 165,xxx on the clock..
cheers guys
dave
Sounds like the clutch cable needs to be tightened a bit. Jack the front of the car up, stick it on stands, and take a look at the driver's side of the gearbox. Should be a black plastic cover somewhere down the bottom - unclip it and slide it back. Underneath you'll find a black dick that the clutch cable is fed through. You can screw it back and forth to adjust the position of the clutch fork at full release. If you can't tighten it up any more, then the clutch fork ball pivot stud needs adjustment inside the bellhousing. and that's a transmission off job.
As for reverse - try shifting into 5th, then finding reverse. Reverse doesn't have synchros, so you have to use the 5th synchros to align the layshaft with your reverse gear.

From experience it would be one of these, most probably:
-stretched or poorly adjusted cable
-collapsed thrust bearing
-incorrect pivot ball height
Everyone that i know with a v6 T5 has to select another gear before selecting reverse VERY CAREFULLY, to avoid crunching. Personally i: clutch, lightly load reverse gate, off clutch and back on, then select reverse slowly. Like a double clutch action.

Reverse grinding is a healthy commodore thing. Mine grinds in reverse nearly every time, unless i wait with the clutch in before selecting it.
