Default How much fuel pump replaced by mechanic?

Went for a short drive today and car just stalled ,put into neutral and started first go then I put in D and continued to drive another 5 seconds then coughed spluttered backfired then stalled and would not start again so Im like wtf the CAS has died so I pulled over quickly popped bonnet and the engine was warm but no way hot operating temperature.

So I waited like 30mins and tried to start and it sounded like it wanted to start but nothing.Got out wacked the fuel tank a few times & tried again but nothing , swapped over fuses but still no good.

I tried turning the key on and off and couldn't hear the whine from the fuel pump , was in middle of no where so called Nrma and he also gave the fuel tank a whack and said all he can hear is a clunking sound so got towed to a mechanic nearby once at mechanic shop I tried to start again but nothing and now when trying to kick over no sounds at all from the fuel pump.

I do have a alarm with immobiliser fitted but if this was the problem then car would not have started right away then die then start again when I put foot to floor then reved a bit then backfire and die.

Im just lucky I wasn't driving to work , that would have been a nightmare in peak hour traffic.

The mechanic is new as one we been going to for years was hopeless and charged me for new aircon compressor that he damaged so F$^K him & this new bloke Im fixing up his computer for free so I sort of want to know what would be mates rates compared to average price to a rip off price?

Just do it yourself, all you need is a pump riped out of your mates front lawn wreck. A garbage bin for the full tank of fuel you just filled it up with

Then have the officals at eastern creek go off at you for spilling a bit of fuel in pit lane where you changed it!

But really if we had all the right tools it could be a 30-60 min job.

Ok had a great day today , got fuel pump replaced , start car and idles fine so pay mechanic the $300 and when I was around the block the car started to cough splutter then backfire and die , put foot to floor got it started again but then again stalled after driving it a little, got it started again made it back to mechanics he then said the Cas needs replacing so I agreed & now car wont start at all so said he doesn't know whats wrong with car so I called tow truck and took my car to an auto electrician who inspected the Crank angle sensor to find it was not fitted correctly and had been ripped to pieces by the balancer ...

so that all cost me $400

Now have to get another one installed.

Once I have car back Im going to detail it and Im selling it , should get $2800 with the paperwork saying 1 old lady owned car and all the reciepts Ive kept

Even if you look after these cars and keep them wrapped in cotton wool your gonna still have problems ...

If This is the type of quality Holden now produces especially with problems with every vn onward model then they can keep their piece of **** cars.

Im better off with a non fuel injected car like a torana or or cortina ..

If your good with jigsaw puzzles go for it yourself, not a very hard job to do yourself. Just watch out for fuel dripping in your eyes.

i know how you feel brother. get 1 thing fixed, the next thing goes wrong. never ending. i have a p/s leak that can't be fixed. coolant started ****ing out of the vaporiser (for gas), so i need a new one of those. runs like **** on startup too. so i just bought a vp calais v8! probably has the same problems lol but it's worth putting money into a car that you like. i'll be lucky (and happy) to get $2000 for my car.

Yeah well I have found a auto electrician thats open 7 days a week 8am to 10pm which is great.

They replaced sensor for $140 with 12 months warranty , cars going fine now & the bad idle after warming up was the CAS & the fuelp pump on it's way out wasn't helping things.

Why Im so ****ed of is the fact I have spent $2000 on it within 6 months ..

    new radiator $400
new balancer $400 ( got ripped)
    new tyres $500
    fuelpump + 2 cas sensors $540

but in the last 3 years Ive spent over $4000 including new suspension , strutbearing plates, 2nd hand air compressor , injector service , brakes , waterpump & thats all I can think of at the moment. So Really I might as well keep the car but Im really ****ed off as you would think with looking after something you wouldnt get as many problems. The cars odometer stopped working like 5 months ago on 199,697 so Im guessing it be at 210,000 by now.I was quoted from $500 to $800 to replace the plastic cog thingy which is a joke but yes the dash has to come off.

When car was up on lift mechanic said rear seal on transmission is leaking and it has to be dropped to repair or some ****.It's not leaking alot as I check the levels every month or so.Last service on transmission was 20,000km's ago.Im gonna throw a bottle of that nulon trans stop leak **** to slow it down.

This seal at back of transmission how much to get fixed ? would be easier to get a reco with warranty ?

Mate that cog is about $15. buy another dash cluster for $20 and have a look, its not hard, undo bolts, pull stuff out, put back in, do up bolts.
And the car is over 15 years old stuff will break, what other car companys make cars that dont have problems 15 years after they where built.
If you dont wanna pay people so much to fix your car then pick up a book, do some research and have a go for yourself.

I also think that you are being a bit too hard on holden - the car is nearly 20 years old. What do you expect? It would be a lot better if you could find decent tradesmen to fix what does go wrong though. Competent ones seem to be very difficult to find and you are not alone with that.

The rear seal on a VN-VP is only $5 or so plus about 1/2 hour of labour if it is only the seal i.e. the seal is leaking because it is old and hard. The seal may be leaking because the bush in the back of the trans. +/or the driveshaft yoke is worn. Those would cost more.

While the part for the odometer is cheap and quite simple to replace, it can be hard to find someone willing to sell you one (I think that there is some legal requirement re. instrument repairs). $80-100 is about right if you remove the cluster yourself. I think there is a 'How To' on that but it's very easy to do; 4 x Philip's head screws, pull the cluster surround/binnacle switches forwards and undo the 5 plugs ( 3 LHS, 2 RHS for Exec.) to the binnacle switches. Then 4(?) more screws to release the cluster. It should only take a few minutes.

lol I will give you $200 to come and fix the odometer ..

    you live in sydney ?

I was quoted anywhere from $500-800 , Im gonna make a few calls around to get best quote.. but im only gonna bother if and when I finally sell the car , sell it with 199,000 on the it...

The cars always been in my mums name so 1 lady owner and low km's should get a good price even if it's in a few more years ..
