Hey guys,
I have a 1990 VN series 2 v6
Having trouble with the Starter motor wont turn over at all unless you get down under the car and wiggle the wires around,
Any ideas on what could be wrong with it or if it just needs replacing, cars to bloody low to get down and under all the time to get it going so i need to get it on stands tomorrow and work it out just need some Ideas,
Have been told you need to drop the exhaust, and the rack to get it offis that true or someone talking shiat
Thanks guys much appreciated

Just tighten up and see if it will fix it, you dont have to remove the Rack is it just normal headers? even if it was pacemakers you can still get em out without moving the rack, on one side that is the other side is different, but you will have to take the header off to get the starter motor out as far as i know.

Before you get in there Hazza, don't forget to remove the battery terminalLots of exposed wiring involved with old starter motors ^_^ lol
You shouldn't have to remove too much to get the starter out if you're a bit nifty with your hands. If not, unbolting the y-piece from the extractors should do the trick. Should also help a lot to remove the trans inspection plateI'm pretty sure series 2 got the chunky ones, with bolts around the sump. If so, and you can't drop those bolts out, jack the trans up an inch from the sump with a plank of wood, and then try ^_^
If you run into a corner, take a piccy and I'll see if I can throw any ideas your way.

I would be checking the cables as said, bare in mind that there could also be a broken solder connection on the solenoid engaging wire terminal where the actual terminal is soldered to the wire that goes inside the solenoid body, have seen this a couple of times. As far as dropping the rack its easy enough all ya need to do is drop the 19 mm bolt out of the passenger side loosten the drivers side and the rack will move down enough to get the starter out, just double check the bolts when ya done
It could also be that by riggling the cables around you are disturbing the stater enough to get worn brushes to make contact and work too, have seen this many times,my advise would be to put it on the ramps try to get it to fail (some one else starting it) with you under it and then, carefully move things around.
OBVIOUSLY TAKE MUCH CARE WHILE YOU ARE UNDER THE CAR !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!,when i do this type of job i also put a some blocks under the body.

i would try sueezing the small wire on the starter motor shut a bit first and clean the terminals on it.
try the easy things first.
If you are taking it right out it is a good time to replace the whole power cable as it will have SFA plastic left on it.
If you do end up needing to change it, I recommend putting in a VR or VS starter motor.
They cost about the same as the VN's from the wreckers (I got a VR one for $40 from Deer Park Wreckers) and are of much better quality and durability, as well as being smaller and much easier to put in.
Just remember to take the holding screws for it when you get it from the wreckers as they are of a different size to the VN's (they fit fine though).
I would be just reaching in and undoing the wiring and cleaning the terminals up, make sure they are all a snug fit, and check that the wiring hasnt coroded inside the lugs. I dont think there is a need to pull out the motor by the sounds of it.
okies got it started and down to an auto electrician he had a look took a couple of hours he got it out cleaned it it was the solder had broken he cleaned it back up put it back together and its good as gold
thanks for ya help guys much appreciated
