a few weeks back my car blew a hose on the freeway and ****ed it's coolant out, after topping it up with water i had a couple of weeks of iffy temperatures/overheats so decided to do a coolant flush and clean/new thermostat.
today driving in traffic it overheated again, so i'm racking my brain to think of why, i noted some coolant on top of the charcoal canister, so i'll makes sure all hose clamps are supertight, but i also heard a vague hissing noise and figured out it was coming from the overflow bottle.
is there anything that could explain this? the bottle's full (maybe too full) and i think the lines join to it properly.
any ideas?
Thermo fan plugged in, Can you bleed the system on it might need to be bled and turn heater on so the water gets into the lines. double check all hoses, what way did the thermostat go in?

The plastic tank on the side of the radiator is probably busted, that happens
thermo fan i'll check out, just run the car with air con on right? bleeding i ran the car till hot and then open the bleed screw and let air out right? i did that a couple of times and got bubbles, but i wasn't sure if taht meant it was fully bled. i also chalf turned the radiator cap when the car was hot to blow air out of the overflow lines.
oh yeah, had that happen before, i'll check that out.
yep, well car wasn't running when i filled it, but heater was set to full when it was running before then so the heater tap shoulda been open fully.
while bleeding the system through the valve, did you have a juice/milk bottle turned upside down where the radiator cap goes? you put that there, with tape around the top of the bottle to seal it on, and fill it with water while bleeding it, otherwise its just gonna suck in more air as it bleeds.

i thought you bled it with the system hot, like pressurised?
the overflow bottle's cap seems to be hissing with pressure when 1/2 turn the radiator cap, so i took the hose that doesn't connect to the radiator off it and tried to blow through it, but couldn't.
this line should be a straight through kind of deal, shouldn't it? might be pinched under battery if so.
ok, pulled the battery out and the hose came free, here's what i found
i don't think i could crimp it that well if i tried! thing is, the hose has always gone there from memory (?)
anyway, now i cut the end off, and it's run through a hole i found in the battery tray so apart from a wet sway bar hopefully my troubles with the cooling are over.
props to everyone who helped, even you 88greenvn (even though you did insinuate my car blew ho's![]()
ok, took it for a drive and STILL oveheating, i might have overfilled the overflow bottle, so i siphoned a bit out of it (coolant tastes just like it smells... delicious!)
also could hear a bit of a hissing, thought it might have been a loose behind the alternator, but i also spotted this
that's the welsch plug on the passenger head, under the coil packs. the coolant i'm running it red, so is it boned?
if the plug is easy to get to, replace it, it dosnt look like a HUGE leak so that shouldnt cause it to overheat. you did put the thermostat in the right way didnt you?
has the coolant temp sender for the gauge been replaced before, might be coincidence tha two thing went at once - just a thought

didn't do the coolant temp sender does that go to the guage or the warning light or both?
i find this very strange this situationthat o-ring stops water leaking out of the thermostat housing. have you sussed the water pump out ? i noticed you said you flushed it out the cooling system ? did you do it yourself or did you get it done with a pressure flushing machine at your local mechanics or radiator repair shop ? also the hissing sound could be your radiator cap hence finding coolant on top of charcoal cannister or in the case of a series 1 the plastic cap has 2 valves in it they are known to bugger up as well which cause hissing
i figured the gasket stopped water leaking out, is everyone else using o-rings on their thermostats?
i just flushed it myself, it's a series 2, but i didn't put a new radiator cap on when i did it all, cos i put one on 2-3 months back.
