so i think this welch plug might be the cause of my overheating issues, even if it isn't the culprit, given it's on the front of the passenger side head it's easy enough to replace.
i grabbed a set of plugs from ricerbarn, 4 smaller that i guess are for the heads, and 6 larger. could someone point me to where are the larger plug locations. there's 2 on each side, but that leaves 2 more.
also the gregorys says yo use a socket to knock them in with, but i've read this can crack them and i don't want to have something **** up and not be able to drive to get a new part.
did anyone out there use a socket, or a proper drift punch?
a socket will do fine, just dont go over board, ie nock it into the block ! and use some sealent stuff aswell, dont put them in dry. Just make sure they are seated corectly, run ya finger around the edge and make sure you dont feel a lip, you want them as even as possible.
Might be a little different, just check out the other's and copy
Yeah a right size socket will work as davo said make you use a sealant and they sit evenly. theres 2 in each head at either end. 2 in each side of the block and 2 in the rear of the block which will require the gearbox to come off...

you need to use a socket or a metal bar to knock them in.
Timber will not do as it gives a little so they won't drive in.
a little goo around the edge befre you install them and it's nice and easy to do.
To remove i normally drive a screwdriver through to lever them out.
lol just do as i did, and paid my mechanic $400 to do the whole lot...all the welsh plugs in the side, front, and back..lol
easier than me tryin to do it on my s1 vn...lol
fronts i can do myself, sides i might wait until i do my sump gasket and get it all done at once. rears i dunno, maybe when my rear main needs doing :P
ok if i were going to do this myself i would undo the air intake, fuel lines selector linkage and maybe the connectors on the auto, y piece then unbolt mounts and slide the whole lot forward to get at the rear head ones. the lower rear block one requires you to romove the box.
This is still a heap of work and would not plan to do anything that day and maybe the next.
Why would you want to replace welch/frost plugs when they're not leaking? most people I've talked to would only replace if 1. engine rebuild 2. rusty plug 3. water expansion due to freezing or boiling which pops it out.
my back one on ma vn sedan blew while doing linelockers in the dirt.i cut a circle of metal that fit nice .put it in the stuffef welsh plug and filled it with liquid metal .cars still going except i blew the trannie
if that front one looks like that ide do them all before you have a rear one in the bellhousing go they are made of sacrificial material that corrodes extreemly well if one looks like that then they will all be getting pretty knaffed
