Hello,
The speedometer on the dash cluster in my VP Calais was working on and off, I purchased another dash cluster for $120, same issue.
What would be the quickest yet most effective way to fix this?
Cheers,
Chris
it's the speed sensor under the car, think it's on the gearbox.
i think replacing is the go, but i got mine done by an auto sparky, all up i think ~$300, steep but i didn't have time to try it myself at the time, that was with a new part. didn't want to get a 2nd hand and have it die
Where can the speed sensor be found exactly?
The speed sensor on the V6 Automatic is on the passenger side towards the back, near the extension housing (where the tailshaft goes). You see the wiring once you stick your head under there.

Just replaced the sensor on the 89 green sedan - $20 and alls good

the needle works but it won't clock up klm's ,is it electrical or cogs, trip meter dosn't work either
Can someone please take a picture of the speed sensor and post it up?
It would be greatly appreciated, thank you.
i believe this would be for both of you, the speedo sensor just unscrews by hand and if it is what the problem is then best option would be get one from the wreckers for about $20 otherwise holden charge about $240 for one.
the 3 wires that go into it get very brittle and hard over the years so it's quite possible that they may have broken off so which you would have to get a new sensor.

hehe yeah dont try fixing it if its shafted, too much of a **** around, remember manual and auto ones are the same
went underneath my car to c if i could take it off. no go? and its covered in fluid too..mayb leak sumwhere. Does it unplug buy the wires first..coz if u unscrew it first itll twist the wires. On v8 vps is it on the same side?Passenger side hey? thnx help would b appreciated
Passenger side. Yes, unplug the wires first.
Okay, so went to the wreckers, they wouldn't take one off for me so I decided to try it myself, unscrewed one off a VN, got home, took mine off and realized the pin in the one I got from the wreckers was broken, looks like I'll be going back to get another.
I just bought a HSV CALAIS V8, the speedo does not work, since this does not work neither will the trip computer, cruise control & distance left till empty. Please how do I rectify this problem, Car is located in Bass Hill area.
Thanks...
I had the same problem speedo works but no k's i checked the servo pick up in the gear box its fine. Next thing to do was check the dash. Pulled the cluster out and apart and found the gears in the k's where stripped!. Brought a secound hand one and it lasted long enought to get through road worthy and the same problem again stripped gears. I ended up getting one from ebay for i think $150 and came with stylish hsv white faced gauges.
In the vn its easy to take out sorry to say $300 is alot of money. All up it took me 20 mins max to put in. Start with the two bottom screws under the lights and window wiper switches. then their are two screws above the gauges. Pull the dash out then their will be 5 wire connectors just pull them off you cant put the connectors back in wronge as they have location pins so you cant stuff them up. On the cluster look for two screws on each side off the cluster and remove them. Now grab the cluster and pull towards you with alittle force and it should unclip.
To check the gears in the cluster remove all the lights then undo all screws plus bolts. And then unclip the membrain going into the fuel gauge. The two parts to the cluster will just fall apart on the side of the k's cluster is a small motor held in by three screws remove them and you can now see the gears check to see if they are stripped if they are then thats your problem.

lol 88 GREEN VN your right sorry didnt think off that. With that note you can use a muilti meter and see if there is any voltage while driving.
