Eldest lad buys a sports steering wheel off a mate of his cheap, this mate was defected 2 nites before for having this particular steering wheel fitted.Anyway now daft son has wound up with it.After warning him it's illegal most likely due to there being no face impact pads & the wheel itself appears to be made of wood but is a hard plastic he tries to fit it.After lots of swearing, wriggling & banging he manages to get the original off.But sumhow thru all of his fiddling he pulled the steering intermidiate shaft out of the steering clamp. No probs me thinks until i find out the steering intermidiate shaft is now wat seems too short & just hangs on by a few mm each side WTF..!!far short of its original position with the 2 bolts passing thru the clamp & thru the provions in the shaft & steering rack pinion. He's not driving it til it's fixed up or the steering clamp may just simply fall off.Wat has he dun to it??..I got no idea...!!!My VK shafts almost touch, i have to slide the clamp up 1 to get it onto the other..
Tony 308vkcalais:
maybe he pulled the entire thing out by accident, is there any excessive length or thread showing where the boss kit connects to the steering column? there shouldn't be too much thread coming through the nut on the top. maybe he did the nut up to tight and pulled all that apart
yeah knock it back down and bolt up the bottom first then the top.
Here in QLD the after market wheels are not legal as the local rule is 350mm diameter or 25mm less then standard, which ever is greater so std vp wheels is about 385mm.
Check the local laws as to why i is not legal.
I would not think that padding for your face would be it. Very few of us are that short.
i think they're too slick then that's defectable too, but there also minimum size requirements and no flat-bottoms are allowed as well.
come to think of it, pretty much anything you look for in a girl, you want in a steering wheel
Just about all are illegal as they are not ADR/ECE approved. Purely for the fact that most are not submitted for ADR/ECE approval as it is too costly.
Momo/Isotta/Walker are 3 brands that do (that doesn't mean all their models pass though). Very few others are approved.
Ya i had one on my last 2 cars but not on this one, in summer when you get sweaty palms got pretty bloody dangerous(no p/s or aircon in the torana LOL) but it was ok in the vl with p/s, got told by the local tmu to remove it as it is defective as it has no padding, have a nice smicky padded leather one now like the hsv one. Don't let him run the woodgrain one imho
ive had my car searched for drugs, ods, you name it (for no good reason) and never been picked on for a pod/steering wheel ect... i know autoterchnica are illegal caus there cheap crap that bends with little force but most cops dont know what there on about anyway, chances are you would need a picky cop in the know to get busted for one.
SUPER gay steering wheel by the way there the cheapest looking ones out there.
in qld there are some autotechnia ones that transport dept list as ok for the vn commodore.
Autotechnica look a lil dodge to me. Not many of their wheels look very high in quality, or very aesthetically appealing.
the last few times ive been pulled over, ive been told off for having no padded centre. once resulting in a defect. you will probably get done for it soon enough. mine was an easy fix. i bought a momo padded centre off a subaru liberty rs and stuck it on my autotechnica wheel

adr requirements for the steering wheel have improved since the sixties. As well as having to achieve some dimension requirements, the steering column itself must be able to collapse inwards(towards the firewall), upon impact as must the rim of the wheel and spokes. Padding in the centre...well it cant have something hard there, and its possible in a large impact to hit heads here......broken noses on the rim being the most popular. Its possible in the ^ situation that part of the collapsable portion of the column may have been damaged by pulling/hitting it in the opposite direction.
Yes, its possible to actually damage wheels by pulling/pushing too hard on them(thats they way they are meant to be).....especially when heavy people use them to haul themselves out of the car etc.
yes, i do wonder at the sense of putting some of these wheels on that wouldnt meet the regs for the year of the car and compromise occupant safety. The dimensions issue, certainly a factor when they are put on a car with wide wheels without power steering......how fast can the driver turn the wheel at low speed here, possibly not an issue with power steering for the average person.
I suppose the moral of the story here is use a steering wheel puller to actually get the wheel off, as damage to the steering column, the wheel and/or yourself is a likely outcome. They can be purchased for a few bucks at any autoparts store.
