Most likely issue with the oil smell is a power steering leak. Check the connections wipe em clean and see if you get fresh oil.

The rattle can be harmonic balancer about to fail (clicky type sound) - look for cracks in the rubber, timming chain tensioner (hollow alloy type sound) or idler pully on the front belt.

i had a power steering leak, it stinks and i couldn't find out where from. greasy headers and a gross driver side engine rail later it turned out to just be the washer at the base of the resevoir

88greenvn, what you wrote is exactly true
the powersteering is over flowing lol..
    no cracks on harmonic balancer.
the idler pulley was allready stuffing up but the alloy sound thing happens when i accelarate.. or when i push down brake n give it gas to 1,100 rpm it sounds like theres a baked bean can rattling inside the engine bay

oh and theres oil leaks ill put piks up tomorow.. where can it be leaking from any ideas?

i like your style, cars running crappy so to make sure its ok you give it a flogging :P

if you had "rod knock" you'd know about it... (ie a spun or ****ed bearing)

you'd be going clackity clack clack clack all the way till the rod took a visit out of the motor... just ask hozy... he did this once :P

ive spun a bearing before and it gets very bad very quick, ie i just made it home

If you can get to them - its knock em out with a screwdriver and put the new ones in using a socket and hammer to tap them into place. Refill car with coolant.

Also when 1 is gone west the others may soon follow. There is 6 in the main block 2 each side and 2 at the rear (greabox out job) and you have 2 in each head from memory.

Man VNs trip me out some VNs are so problematic and others run almost magically

my VNa Coilpack was ****ed but I didnt know all I knew is it kept stalling on me randomly quite often, finally I got it looked at and the original part got pulled out which was factory (89) and my mechanic told me that cos of all my restarting the car my starter motor was so ****ed it _shouldnt_ of started ever and it shouldnt of even been able to drive down the road without stalling as the CAS wires werent even connected anymore but lo and behold it would get me to work everyday and start always first go in the morning lol

I would be wrong if I didn't say that I was once like you, but you will start to realise that thrashing cost $$$. Meaning wear and tear on your engine, gear box, drive shaft, diff, and wear on your tyres. Plus you will even get even more fuel economy if you ease off the peddle It's up to you, but its a very expensive hobby!
