Hi there Vn drivers and Admirers,

    I have a VN 89 V6 Commodore.
I have a funny problem with it that Holden themselves couldn't find. At the end they told me to replace the ECU which I did but the fault is still there.

Anyway the problem is that when I am driving the car (mainly it happens on hot or humid days) the engine symbol comes on the dash.
I know that you can count the value of it, but the symbol comes on for 20sec consistantly then goes off for around 10mins then sometimes it comes back on again for around another 20sec.

How anyone else had a problem like that before? If so please help !!!

    Thanks

    Regards,

    arty

I only got engine symbols when I rebult my motor and used the stock chip. I knew I was going to get running rich all the time. I know the only time my light came on was to inform I was running rich, or running lean.

I cant think of the wires in the plug you short out. If you read through the list somehwere here on this site, it tells you how to diagnose what the engine lights mean. It wont flash at you the codes your wanting when driving in everday conditions, you have to insert a wire between 2 terminals in the ADL something or other plug, then turn yuo igntition to on thats when it starts flashing the whats wrong code.

hey sport, i had a very very similar problem with the vn, have a look at your exhaust manifiold, check the o2 sensor, if it's got a intermitent fault, it will come on, and go off, and come on, and go off, nothign major, mine was a crack/split in the webing, they are cheap to replace, how ever, holden dont have exhaust manifolds anymore, had to get it from the wrecker's, all is fine now, no more problem with the lboody thing, for some reason, it didnt show up as a fault code on the ecu.

    Hi All,

I notice you say to check the o2 sensor. Is that the oxygen sensor by any chance.
If not where is the o2 sensor because I have been in my trusty Gregory manual and I can't seem to find it.

o2 sensor is on the exhaust manifold, stand on the passanger side of engine bay, and look at the exhaust maifold, you will see it goes down to the flange, just above the flange is the exhaust manifold, but check to see if you have any problems with the manifold it's self, look for cracks, split's stuff like that,

go to the commodore specs and info section on this site, you will see there what you need to do so you can get a fault code reading out of the ecu. i would be doing that first. all the codes are their also.

follow the directions for exctracting codes down to the tea, if you dont, you can kiss the ecu goodbye

hey guys, I use to have a VR Calais that used to have that exact same problem. I know that the engine light is there for a reason but I did just leave it, turned out to be the o2 sensor whch it also known as the oxygen sensor. Anyway I did just leave it and the problem ended up out lasting the transmition and gearbox itself so no real biggy

Is it cutting in and out when the car is hot, or does it cut in and out at all times, including when the car is NOT up to temperature.

What we need to find out, is if the fan cuts in randomly when it's not supposed to, or if it's turning on when it's meant to, but then cutting out occasionally. If you catch my drift.

    I would suggest either faulty:

    1) wiring
    2) relay
    3) fuse
    4) fan motor
    5) coolant temp sensor
    6) signal from ecu

    Thanks guys

i think i found the problem, gave the ecu a whack when the motor was carrying on like an unregistered dog and bingo it started running properly again. took the ECU apart, cleaned up the terminals and chip, hit it with CRC and so far so good.
