Would anyone be interested in welding up the diff on my '76 dolomite sprint?
or mores the point, does anyone know of a good place in melbourne that would fabricate a minispool for me?
    cheers.

You could give GJ Drivelines in Dandenong (I think)
They specialise in this kind of stuff.

If you weld a plate in and all around the plate it won't break .. ever.. Most people who do it and it breaks is because they dont know how to weld properly.

Just think about truck tow balls are welded they tow like 10ton plus do they break???

Then a spool should be there aswell. All are illegal and just as dangerous. Only thing wrong with welding it up is you cant undo it and put it back to stock.
A custom made spool is going to take a week at least cost ****loads. Welding will take an hour and wont cost f all.

Its up to you if your prepared to throw the money at it by all means get a custom spool made

didn't say it was. Figured saying it that way might turn him off because of the expense of getting it done thus making one less unroadworthy POS with a fool behind the wheel on roads i have to share with them.

Lol if we wish hard enough it might be a track only car that doesnt get driven on the street. Sometimes no matter how hard you try you can't change peoples minds if they seriously want to do thiings there's no stopping them. I tried to get a guy at tafe not to chop coils off a set of king springs, he wouldn't listen i even tried reasoning with and siggested he keep or sell the springs and chop up a set of stock ones.

yeah and we've heard this from you before - they might not be to you because you are used to them. Not in everyones case though.

I don't think 150kmh is dangerous either. Because it hasn't ever been a problem for me.

Exactly. But a 70yo grandma isn't going to fit a spool to her car now is she?

A welded diff is prone to breakages, and can cause the wheels to lock if a piece of weld gets lodges in the gears. No such worry with a spool.

The speed isn't the problem, its the condition of our roads.

Don't have to be a granny to make a mistake.
So long as you don't promote illegal behaviour you can probably say what you like about them, saying they aren't dangerous is a massive call though. Like stated, guns are safe too, until people are mixed with them.

Welded diffs shouldn't break if it's done correctly. Get out the glue stick, crank the amps up to "brownout" and let rip (Don't be shy). Un-gluing on the other hand is not quite so straight forward. As others have said, I wouldn't recommend locking the diff for a daily driver though.

Guns don't kill people, people kill people.
Spools don't kill people, stupid drivers kill people, some have spools, some have LSDs, some have open wheelers.

    I'm missing your point?

But driving at 150 on average roads is dangerous, i'm not seeing how driving on a road with a spool is.

Thats because people dont know how to weld

I recommend a low hydrogen electrode for their high tensile and good penetration properties 3.2mm or 4mm with amps in the 150-210 Depending on on electrode thickness and welding position. Slag is also quite fluid on these making them great for out of position welding

So we've established welders are dangerous? or just the 'people' using them that don't know how to use them?
