just wondering - my vp v8 is showing code 44 oxy sensor lean...
symptoms - car idles fine but under load it feels as though its either not getting enough petrol or gettin too much as it is stuttering and backfiring a bit
basicly undrivable at the moment ..
i got no probs changin oxy sensor will have to wait but is this likely to be the cause of my current problems or is it possible theres some other problem.
no other codes are present on the ecu....
I'd try unplugging the O2 sensor and plugging it back in, then resetting the ecu.
Then see if it still feels the same.
If it was, I'd be replacing the O2 if it's fairly old.
yeh ill definitely be replacin it - when i have time an tools handy - worse thing it breaks down at a mates place where i have no tools an stuff to deal with it
Wouldn't a failing O2 sensor initiate limp-home mode?
im not to sure - i cant limp it home thats for sure it idles fine just underload it sort of stutters and backfires a bit - feels like its not gettin any fuel when i revv it - bout a week ago had fuel pump and various other things looked at for another problem after a car accident
Well then, try what I posted first off, and then replace it.
They're pretty cheap anyway. Like $50 for the 1 wire sensors.
yeh mines got 2 wires tho - ill grab that one and see how she goes hopefully that fixes the problem - GOD i hope so

It sounds more like an ignition fault to me with the uncombusted oxygen being picked up by the O2 sensor when it passes into the exhaust.
Try 'plugs, leads (including coil lead), distributor cap, rotor button or, perhaps, the coil.
thanx for the tip mite do the leads at the same time - coil is 3 mths old so should be ok
changed o2 sensor , - no good
changed leads - no good - bastard of a job
changed spark plugs - no good
checked fuel pressure - good - according to the gregories manual
got me stuffed - mobile mechanic thursday to nut it out
grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
Me i'd check your timing if its way out you might be causing it to lean out maybe your harmonic balancer spun aswell

i didnt do those but the mobile mechanic did mention those so i guess there gettn done then - what a bitch to get the distrib cap on and off - sheeesh would rather pay someone to do it
Make sure you get him to do the timing aswell while ge's out should only take a couple of minutes more

Your problem is very similiar to mine, except mine is a six-cylinder. Does the car drive at all or does it stall when you try to accelerate? Mine idle's fine, but feels as if it runs real rough when under load and then it stalls and wont start for awhile. Im thinking its most probably, in my case, the coil pack. Might be worth while checking over your ignition side of things
I came to this thread 100% sure you had a half dead fuel pump and not much fuel pressure but seems my theory was wrong, now I'm 90%:P sure your timing is out
yeh car seems to idle fine - however soon as u put some accellerator into it it coughs and spluttters and backfires and eventully stalls - well hopefully its something simple like timing - will find out tomorow morning and lets yas all know....

Never tell your problems to anyone...20% don't care and the other 80% are glad you have them.

hmm ok mechanic looked at car ----
results:...
distributor cap not on correctly - maybe my fault lol
2 x leads round the wrong way - again my fault - i only changed them after car started failing though
1 x sparkplug knackered - he seems to think this was initial cause
it had a huge crack in it and wasnt sparking...
checked timing as said all is good there
adjusted the idle as well
fuel pressure is good
so there ya have it a oxy sensor and knackered spark plug can cause backfiring
cheers to all for ya help
