Default bomb proof your airbox - tidy fix

Next time you are down the wreckers, ensure your replacement air box / lid comes with an air outlet fixture.

Go home, remove air outlet fixture from destroyed box and fit to front of new box as per pics.

Now for the tricky bit, go and raid the ministry of war's cleaning cupboard and find a suitable lid / cap. I found a 1 kg napisan lid to be fairly adequate on a fixture from a VN wreck. footnote: the missus did NOT find it adequate that I was using the bed spread as a backdrop for the pics.

Give the lid a lick of paint, (check your local laws for legals re: mods) and start replacing your leads/plugs (instead of your leads/plugs AND airbox) next time should she backfire.

    good idea.

has it worked for you yet?

what happens when your driving along, it backfires and the lid pops off. you keep replacing the lids or do you drive back to find it?

I spose instead of keep replacing the lids, (hard wire the lid to the mount), i'll try and rectify the fault. Can't afford to keep replacing napisan lids.

Gas systems are prone to backfiring, and blowing the airbox apart in the process. Which is why he posted the thread.

IMO, Looks ugly, i'll keep my fuel efficent V8 and smooth airbox thanks.

    LOL @ YOU you nong.
you cant even see the mixer in these pics.
Where the hell are you comming from

I say good try mate. I have seen much worse backfire valves that for sure. Unfortunatly you are running air valve gas system with the old rich bias mixer that controls gas mixtures by leaning off the mixture. this is a problem cause when you accelerate the chances are that the processor is half way through its leaning cycle so it leans out heavily on acceleration and backfires (lean backfire is a very common cause of backfires on V6 engines)
The newer lean bias logic processors I run actually inject a puff of gas into the mixer on acceleration just the same as a petrol carby has for over a hundred years. Ever driven a petrol car with the accelerator pump shagged. it will backfire on acceleration too.
You can buy a 'dump' valve from Impco to put on the convertor so when you accelerate the pressure build up in the gas mixture control valve circuit will dump and allow the convertor secondary valve to open easier and richen up properly. they are limited in their effectiveness but work pretty well. they will also help to remove flat spots or hesitation on acceleration, once again all caused by lean mixtures.

you should attach a string to it so you don't lose it! good idea though, hopefully you won't have to experience a backfire again anyway.

generally backfiring in gas happens when your sparkplugs are shagged or it has a break down of spark due to leads or improper mixtures, this flap just lets all the pressure out when it backfires pressure out the inlet manifold

Mate of mine had the gas installer spend ****in ages trying to get his not to blow airboxes apart. In the end he got rid of the gas.

there are some people who have had very bad experiences with LPG... i've only had 1 backfire in my life and i've been driving cars on LPG since i had my Ls. my backfire was caused by absolutely ****ed leads, once i replaced them it was perfect. praying to god my v8 doesn't backfire on my new LPG system but i've given it a quite a booting and nothing bad so far. seems to love it . i'll definitely be making something similar just in case, perhaps smaller and towards the back so it's not as visible though. i never look under the hood so it wouldn't matter, but i'm just one of those people...

I thought you said you weren't going to destroy that car with gas.

i was briefly influenced by everyone's mentality towards lpg when i said that. it's almost brainwashing, and i probably did actually use the word destroy. however i realised quite a few things after that though. firstly, my car may be unique but it's not like it worth any more than the next commodore. i haven't gone out and completely ruined a collectors car or something. in fact i didn't ruin anything! lpg doesn't destroy cars! ultimately it's only a few holes here and there if the system was to be removed. secondly, i still drive a v8. it's not like lpg has turned my car into some 60kw 4cylinder. it's still fast, i haven't been able to notice the power loss yet (no doubt it's there though). i'm even using the dreaded ring type setup! the rule of thumb is that if you're not at WOT, the power difference doesn't matter. the only time you car could possibly be slower is when your at WOT. so i would recommend it to anyone who doesn't constantly floor their car all around the place. all in all, i'm quite happy i put my car onto lpg.

That's very neat, kz. I like what you've done there I love seeing people whip up ghetto mods to fix problems, and this has got to be one of my favorites!

Love the napisan lid, too. If I were you, I'd get a thin, flat rubber strap, and plastic-weld or araldyte it neatly to the airbox and across the top of the napisan lid, giving a few inches of slack. Down and to the right, something tidy.

Post up some pics when you've come up with something

Once again, love the ingenuity, positive rep left.

generally it backfires on gas when you start the car on gas. if you start it on fuel then flick to gas you shouldnt get the problem.

    is this true?
