it's not the balancer or something? they seem to make a rattling/tapping noise when the rubber cracks/disappears.

Wow, AWESOME thread title mate ^_^

Could be valvetrain rattle, or a noisey injector.

Get a long flat blade screw driver and rest it on each injector and stick your ear on the handle end to amplify the sound, if the sound matches then you may have fuond your issue.

they make a bad noise noise, i broke one on my v6 and spun a few big ends/ main bearings... i cant listen because im at work but get a big screw driver and use it to listen to the motor (you the blunt end on your ear) you can hear inside the motor

Anything long and metal will do I've used breaker bars, a crowbar, a big spanner, an old aerial...

But a big metal screwdriver is best, and press the handle into your ear

and press the handle into your ear
i had a mental image of some one pushing my head in to the screw driver and walking around with it lodged in my brain like frankonstain.

lmao, that's a fantastic mental image mate If you want to be a wanker, you can go out and buy an actual stethoscope... I guess that would be kind of cool. I want one now...

Just curious, were they ****ed because they were ticking? Because they're all meant to tick a little bit

yea they tick loud when listening to them through the screwdriverscope or gardenhosescope, when trying to find engine ticking, always ALWAYS check your exhaust connections 1st, 80% of engine ticking is actually exhaust (well maybe not 80% that was a made up stat)
