Hi,
I changed the resevoir on my power steering pump, I put a new o ring in, the old one wasnt split or broken when I took it out, but it was a lot harder than the new one. (I bought a rebuild gasket kit) and smeared a bit of silicone on the resevoir before putting it back in the slot. I changed the low pressure line with a new one and a new clamp and it still leaks, but not from the resevoir or the low pressure hose as it was still dry after the leak but drips of oil were going on the oil filter, heather hose coming from the engine, and the wiring below it, chassis and on the engine below the pump.
I tightened up the high pressure hose and put a bit of silicone around the outside of the nut to try and see if the leak came from there and it didnt leak from there.
I tried tightening up the 2 bolts that hold the pump to the engine but they were already torqued up to spec (from max ellery) as I used a torque wrench.
Can I take the pump off and put silicone around the housing before putting it back on to the engine? Will the silicone just get squeezed out? Do those gaskets inside the pump usualy blow out? The reason why I want to do this is because the leak is dripping onto the oil filter, heater hose and the chassis rail and I have done everything else except for replacing the pump. The rack boots are fine. I dont want to fork out for another one if it is just going to leak again but I will as a last resort. I suppose I could just replace the gaskets in the pump. Apart from that the pump works fine.
What options do I have to get it sorted?
it is essentially the same engine and many more vn owners would have had the problem
me mates car (vn...used to be mine) i changed the power steering pump before i sold it as the one that was on there was a recoed one...anyway the one i put on had a leak were it just leaked heaps then maybe none for a few days then again etc.... But the seal on the back of teh pump im pretty sure has dried up and causing it to leak (im gonna help him fix it when he has time)....seal kits are like 10-15 bucks and you really only need the rear one as thats the one that normally stuffs up in then although the front shaft seal is known to go as well. There is a split ring type clip at the rear of teh pump (after you take it off car) then there is a hole that u poke a blunt object into so it pushes this clip out. The backing plate should come off and there should be a spring. One this is off (may have to tap it) you will see the seal on the outer caseing of teh pump (big O ring) fish thatout and put new one in makeing sure it seats properly, then put spring and backing plate back and clip back on.
hopefully leak free!!:P
Thanks guys, I will put some new seals in and see how I go.
make sure when u put in the seal for the shaft you lotite it in, as after a few minutes of running them always seem to pop out
