If u don't want to pull the heads off you need among other things- a valve spring compressor of course, and some way of pressurising the cylinder with air to hold the valve up so it wont fall in, of stuff the cylinder with rope through the spark plug hole as someone told me on here !! make sure its a long rope though so you don't loose it in there

its better to take the heads off, hit the tops of the valves with a ahmmer (soft) so they bounce and loosen the collets, use a spring compressor and make sure u dont loose the collet bits ( if u do send me a message and i will see if i have any laying around.
remove the hats, slide the spring up, push the valves through, might need to tap them . clean the valve shafts and pop off the valve stem seals.
lightly oil the shafts pop the stem seals on the block. make sure there is no burrs on the valve stems and make sure u dont inter change them.
oil the collet halves and reverse the proceedure

    you guys suck

first of all valve springs need to come off, they're held in by 2 collets, and a retainer plate,

a overhead valve spring compressor will do the trick but before you use that you have to tap the retainer (NOT THE VALVE END) with a hammer to loosen it up untill when you hit it the valve does not open..

ive done this 4x now (once on a v8 in car and twice on a v6 out of car)
i had to remove my master brake cyclinder to get to some of the springs in car.

once the valve springs off you'll see the valve stem seals, to stop the valve dropping into the cylinder (like stocky :P) you remove the spark plus and either use a screw driver or a allen key in there so it cant drop in.. also rotate the crank so the pistons high

4 times u say? is that all, done it twice on v6s and done it on all the heads of 3 v18 submarine engines so thats 54 heads and 216 valves, guess you suck

Good luck Tim. clean your pushrods out while you're at it.

Paradox , how does once plus twice = 4x ?
But your right about rotating the crank to bring the piston up on each cylinder as you work along. you need less rope that way !!

inside the pushrods is a hole, clears out the oil crappy oil in there and promotes better flow and looks better . a good engine is a clean one

well done 1 side, found a easier way is to use the rope in the cylinder and give the spring a couple decent wacks with a tube spanner and the collers will eventually fly out i only lost 1 lol, and the valves wont really fall in if theres no downwards pressure applied to them.
made a massive differance, no smoke at idle and actualy picked up a bit more throttle response, carnt wait till the other side is done.

Why didn't you put some YT roller rockers or Mace Rockers on while you were there ? New pushrods as well etc...

Your lucky with valves not falling in, i usually tell all my customers to buy a spark plug airline adapter.

It all depends how bad the burrs are on the valve stems. On the last set of valve springs I did, the valve stems were burred so badly the valves wouldn't go down if I tried
