    Angry VN Overheating

    hi DUDES....

so my car is over heating, it's like the fan isn't working, but it is!! (although i reckon its faulty (the relay?)

but anyway, so this is what I did:

started car, took top off water bottle, filled up (had heater running), it appeared to over flow the top of the bottle, but none theless i put the lid back on, noticed some water coming from where the radiator is located (i know it can't be a cracked i just changed it!) so it would have to be the overflow line. so i check further back towards the back of the engine (under neither) and i see and feel water dripping on the road, near the centre of the back of the engine around inline with the firewall...

so what could it be ??

personalyy i would drive it somewhere else to check for a leak - after filling the overflow all its gunna do is leak everywhere until it stabilizes to the right amount ...

if u think its the relay swap for one of the others there and see if that changes anything - fan should come on just before half on ya temp guage

well the fan turned off as it got to 3 quarter of a way, on 25c+ days it goes to almost red, then the fan must kick in and it cools down, but im losing water so i dunno.

there wasn't any milkyness in the oil, so water ain't getting there, and i just did an oil change and thats fine...

there is however, water stains running down where the water pump is, but i've ran the car, and looked for leaks around there but I didn't see any.

leaking welshplug or split heater is is my guess.
a heater hose pack is a good idea at time like this.

have you cheked the little hose above the pump, it tends to cause drama and is not in the hose packs

Common place for a leak at the front of the motor is the timming cover behind the hose outlet.

You will get stains (green if coolant) on the front corner of the block runnig down to the corner of the sump. White if you are just using water - cos all the coolant has gone missing over the past few weeks.

With the fan - swap a relay over with the horn relay just to eliminate this as a problem.

i had an issue with a hose behind the engine, it connects into the inlet manifold.
try checking that one for leaks.

it is pretty firm, after a 20 minute drive from work, then another 10 through the city, pulled over, popped hood and it wasn't hard, but wasn't soft either, but too hot to hold on too haha *ouch!!*

yeah there appears to be white/brown stains below the water pump, but its not leaking as such. well, nothing is coming out around that area. I stopped using coolant because its a waste of money if i can't stop the leaking

there is a little hose that goes from the top of the radiator bottle to the top of the motor, I'm not sure what this does, but it appears i have cracked it, and steam and hot water it coming out of it which is at the top of the bottle.

the relays have always been a problem, its like i replace one , but a day later it does the same. it seems like there is a lot of moist surrounding that area and i think that could be my problem on the fan side of things.

i think i have a leak from the pipe that goes to the back of the engine, not sure if this is an easy fix, but i'll have to see what i can do.

today, i took out the black "re stricter" if you like, in the throttle body, not that it made a difference, but I decided why not check out the thermostat, well I removed it completely, put new o ring and glue in, but it seems to get to 3 quarter, so pretty hot considering it doesn't have the thermostat in it. i put fresh coolant and water in.

so i'm thinking it could well be my radiator, but its a second-hand new one, so meh.

i noticed when trying to take the cap off the radiator bottle, it was under a lot of pressure, water was going to come out but tightened it again.

Make sure that your temp gauge and temp sender are working correctly. These are a guide only. Use a thermostat, check your hoses, radiator (oh, and no such thing as second hand new, its either NEW or USED, secondhand means used), remove your belt, check your water pump, use recommended coolant and if still losing water try a pressure test.

The cooling system in these Buicks is really a no brainer.

corroded welsh plugs are a big problem on VNs - holden skimped on the material. have a look under the engine - they're hard to see but get a torch and if there's any sign of corrosion, change them. (this is a bit of a job) when i took mine out, it was a real mess inside.
