Who knows but my way is, pour in coolant, rev engine (coolant drops), pour in more, rev engine (coolant drops) pour in more (coolant doesn't drop), drive away

I let the thing idle but same theory - keep doing it and shove my finger in and keep repeating until I feel warm coolant (means the thermo is open).

Same again After just refilling the system, most of the air is trapped after the thermostat in the upper radiator hose. As such, I find it helps to jiggle and squeeze the hose and encourage the air to move out to the radiator cap.

Aside from that, just fill 'er up 'till it stops dropping
