WIll a calais dash work in a vn exec without the calais loom i only mean the speedo tacho temp and fuel gauges
yeap, it should do. except yours is an exec so it may be different. i think the execs used the cable system for the speedo but the "berlina - calais" used the electronic method..
just pull your old one out and have a look around and see if all the points will match up, but wait for someone to reply who definitely knows what will happen if you drop the calais cluster in.
no cable has the 3 plugs at the back just pushes in
I think it will as the early vns had a loom that suited all dashes and it was a plug in and play thing but they then changed to the two different looms to save dough .If you look in the vn manual for wiring it shows the complete level 3 type dash setup wiring with the connectors taped back where they weren't needed.
On the back of the dashes there is a terminal layout and what their functions are if your original dash and the calais dash terminals have the same functions it will be ok.
Not sure how the audible alarm is affected though.

Err, how "early" are these cars supposed to be?Originally Posted by markovr
I have an '8/88 one (exec) in the barn, and it has no extra wiring in it. I can take photos to prove it all too!
Nor have any of my customer's cars (early VNs) that I worked on from '88 to '95.
It seems to be a bit of an urban legend lately about these execs running around with full calais wiring in them.
I think where the confusion comes from is the VN HSV models got a different loom to suit the trip comp dash in base models (like the VN clubby) and some of these may have slipped out into other cars - but this would not have occurred until march 1989 onwards (after the V8 release).
Early ones don't have the audible alarm, it was added as a running upgrade - just like climate, the change from cobra to mongoose alarms, deadlocking, changed solenoids for the locks, 3rd brake light..........Originally Posted by markovr
The alarm & all these are all covered in Volume 10 of the Genuine VN Service Manual
Sorry to generalise ...I was just going on what I have heard and the fact that in the diagram showing the vn wiring loom ( below), conn 4 ( the trip computer connector) is shown taped back....from that I could only assume some looms had this feature but not used.
When I did the conversion to my vp I had to change some wires in connector 1 as the idiot light feeds weren't on the same terminals between the level 2 and 3 for idiot lights like check eng, brake fail , l/h indicator and press remote .
