    could be either. drive it up on ramps or something so you can have a good look , and see if its leaking through the gasket or coming from above.

    mate if you think it may be the gasket then it has been a long time between services so you realy need to do it now.

    no they are meant to lock the gears up firmer which means less slippage. slipping wears clutch packs and burns oil so they are a good thing.

    Well you can do a service yourself, it's not too hard Just be prepared to make a big happy mess.

    Where on the trans is it? Front, back, sides... get under there with a can of degreaser, spray it all around, let it soak in, then hit it with some water from a spray bottle and wipe it all off with some good paper towels. Once it's nice and clean, take it for a quick spin and see where the oil's coming from

    You need to identify where exactly the leak is, before you go diagnosing it. Could be the gasket, could be the rear extension housing seal, could even be seeping out from the front.

    I know on my car, the power steering is leaking so badly it's getting p/s fluid all over my transmission. So it LOOKS like my T5 is leaking auto fluid lol

    I had a genius* mechanic put 2L too much oil in the auto trans of my Liberty wagon.. i made the mistake of accepting his word and not checking that he hadnt over-filled it.. and then it blew the brass welds between the two halves of the torque converter as i was merging onto the Eastern Fwy the next day. Many litres of trans fluid being dumped onto a hot catalytic converter = LOTS of smoke. I was displeased.

    * = LOL not really.
