upholstering plastic interior items -- VN calais

okay this may sound stupid
but i was wondering how i would put fabric (mayby vinyl or somthing)
over some plastic interior parts,
like the one that surrounds the gear shifter/cigarette lighter
and perhaps the grip on the armrests..

is this possible? and if so, how would i upholster these items...
glue/staples or somthing?

I would imagine glue would be fine on most bits, as long as you don't use too much and it seeps through. But if you used vinyl it would be fine
